diy subwoofer help!!

Hi i'm new to all this but need some help!
I have been through a few subwoofers from richer sounds which have all been appalling so i want to build myself a subwoofer to save some money (i can't afford five hundred pounds+ !!)
I really like the sound of a twelve inch, but want something that will hadle the same as my speaker set up, no distortion at high volumes! i have a gale 12" at the mo (150w) which is nice at low volume but flaps like anything when turned up.
I guess i'd like to spend around £200 (excluding the mdf) could someone give me some advice about what and where i should buy an amp an driver to do the job. i have a seven channel sony amp with extra dedicated sub out point so would want an active sub with auto on/off.
Many thanks for your help!!!!
Rob

We have a DIY forum here where a few have tackled their own subwoofers. Have a look there as there will be more useful info there for you to read.

Bk electronics sell drivers and amps,CLICK but for a bit more you may as well get xls200 for £279.CLICK.It doesn't worth building the box to me.

I agree with Bob1. How BK produce the XLS200 for the price is quite something. Machining MDF is a bit of a hazard and the end product has to look good in the lounge. The electronics is the easy part until you get a BFD.

Well i still enjoy my DIY sub very much, it's FG amazing !! Everyone that has heard it is totally gobsmacked.

But then the BK unit is good value for money.

It's all down to you, do you want an easy method, or would you rather work on your own sub from scratch !!

Cheers

I found this German site today http://www.lautsprechershop.de/hifi/index_en.htm they have some very interesting kits including subs and dipole subwoofers too
I don't know anything about the company but might order something small to check them out.

I just noticed that BK sell the Alcone drivers used in some huge subs on the Strassacker website.

thanks chaps! i forgot to say i am a builder so building it isn't a problem, i quite fancy a towery looking thing anyway. this may sound daft, but do you reckon i could buy a second hand amp (normal two channel) or even a car stereo amp? the modules still seem a lot for what they are, and i could get a lot more power for the same price.it will all be hidden so size isn't the problem!!

I don't think car stereo amps will enjoy 240v...

The dedicated subwoofer panels are worth getting as they carry all the inputs and controls you'll need, in a simple to install unit. I got my BK BSBP100 off eBay for about £60 but they don't come up that often.

If you don't want a crossover then a mono amp module will be sufficient and cheaper.
