Stand alone subwoofer amps ?

Is there any stand alone subwoofer amps ? As said before i have a Kef thx 45B sub with a dead amplifier, I have looked at the BK plate amps and was wondering is there are any amps that would be suitable to run my driver ? Im not that bothered in having the amp in the back of the sub, so was thinking of buying a second hand amp ( power amp?) and connecting the thx output from my Denon THX amp into the the amp and then run the Kef drive unit from the speaker output from the amp ? I believe the THX output will be filtered to 80htz and less so it would be just altering the volume on the amp to match my main amp ? Is that poss ?

Would this be possible ? To get a power amp Say Rotel which is 90 watts and bridge it, which says it works in mono at 180 watt into 8 ohms, so would this make it 360 watt into 4 ohms ? thanks and use that ?

That will work fine, the only issue that may arise is if you need some of the adjustments on the back of the sub amp. Phase can be taken care of with the amps distance setting, and reversing the polarity of the wiring to the sub from the power amp. Gain can be taken care of with either the second amps volume if it has one, or with the sub trim level.

Some of the DIY guys wanting a lot of cheap power use pro PA rack amps that are generally used for gigs and the like. The sub is essentially just a speaker to be powered by an amp.

That amp would be fine, but you can find cheaper ones than that. To much power isnt a problem, as you simply keep the amp turned down so it is within the safe operating range of the driver. Generally, most drivers can handle more than they are rated anyway.

which amp would you recommend ? Funds are tight so looking for a second hand version of whatever amp ? How would it compare to the original one fitted to the Kef sub the 300 watt THX amp module ? I never did think the amp on the Kef was very good and not for the RRP price of £800..thanks

Why are PA amp so cheap ? Whats the main difference in a hi fi amp and a pa amp and do you need a hi fi amp to power just a bass driver or is the quality of a PA amp good enough ? thanks
