Well I have not run a sealed subwoofer for a while so I was tempted to hear how clean one of my spare Fi Audio SSD 12 woofers were like sealed. (I have 4 big woofers doing nothing at the moment).
I dug out a 1.75 cubic foot (roughly 50 liter) after displacements enclosure.
For those interested the final Qtc was of around 0.62, these woofers are optimised for fairly small enclosures.
Put in 1/3rd fibre fill, screwed in the subwoofer and checked it was totally airtight.
I have a Bk Elec BSBPV500 Plate amp so roughtly 500 WRMS into 4 ohms.
So I fired it up and calibrated it. As expected it was 6-8db quieter than my current DIY Duel 10 inch ported enclosure so have lost a fair bit of efficiency.
After equalising the level I had a listen to some music, it had a very tight sound, a fair bit cleaner and dryer sounding than my current ported affair.
The output was fairly flat to 32hz but then started to roll off, it was clear that it did not dig down into the low 20's or teens as well.
I'm going to boost the low 20's by 6db to see if I can flatten the responce a bit. I have plenty of xmax to spare (another 12mm) as I'm only using half of the available excursion (21mm linear one way xmax).
Here are a couple of Pics.
I now have to fight the urge to build a 4 x 12 design......
