Pure SQ Sub Design & Build

Hi all,

I have played around with designing subs for a long time now and now have a bit of money coming in soon so now is the time to ask some questions and pin somthing down.

The main build targets are

Sound quality - I want a sub capable enough for high quality music reproduction. I hate boomy subs. i want texture and punch.

Size - I dont have limitless space as i live in the UK. i would like to use as a sofa side table so height and depth not a problem. width i would like to keep less than 14".

Extension - 20Hz would be nice but not a requirement. 30Hz or less.

SPL - Not an issue really. 90dB is but have not measured loud listening levels but would guess at about that level. I never listen at concert levels.

Price - It's either DIY or a monolith so £420 all in. Amp will more than likley be O Audio - 500W BASH Subwoofer Amplifier which comes in at £166.67 that leaves £253 for driver and enclosure.

Would transmission line be a viable solution?

Does an Infinate baffle designed woofer work well in TL designs?

Does Fi audio ship to the UK and if so how much is shipping for a 12"?

In this situation would you guys go for DIY or the monolith?

Stu.

Stu,

The UK FI seller is blade ice. Just do a search for them but the FI Q18 is £289. They are expensive but they are really good subs. Their IB sub is £189.

cheers

Re: Pure SQ Sub Design & Build

ok cool, price looks good for the IB3 12" leaves plenty of money for the TL if....

my understanding is that IB doesn't have any back loading therefor has no distortion due to compression.

my understanding of transmission lines mean that there is also no back load as it is a tube?

so using the IB sub in a TL will work well?

if so i think its time to get google sketch out....

for a 20Hz TL tuning am i right in assuming a line length of 3 meters? and then reduce length a little to bring the tuning frequency up to about 25Hz?

how long would it need to be reduced by?

The Subwoofer DIY page v1.1 - Transmission Line Systems: Design Notes

I don't think I see an IB driver in your stars.

Re: Pure SQ Sub Design & Build

ok maybe not then lol.

I've seen a few 8" hifi drivers that have FS in the 20's would there be drawback to using these as im not after 120dB in output? I'm thinking maybe http://www.etongmbh.de/en/products/h...hex/1/pid/166/

or should i just look at a more classic sealed design with a big woofer in a sealed box?

i heard a PMC system a little time back and thought that the bass was the best i've ever heard, so wanted to try and replicate this without spending the £2350 for the PMC lol.
