6th Order Series Bandpass boxes

10" Seas driver in 6th order series bandpass box from 15 years ago. I made two for stereo with Linn Kans.
Two house moves and exile in the shed have rather taken their toll.
I keep the ports stuffed with big rolls of foam and port panels together to keep any wildlife out.
Roughly a 19" cube and damned heavy they sit on rubber doorstops with the opening panel underneath.
Only the 4" port produces any sound.
The inside is separated into two chambers of 25 and 75 litres with a long, bent, 3" port connecting them.

Red curve nearfield at the port.

Not bad at all except that I had to rewire my system just to drive it.

Designed for 20-120Hz(-3dB) passive roll off to match the Kans.
100dB max with 100Watts maximum power handling. I saw 105dB(C) on the old RS meter.
The other traces are 90 degree rotations of the sub with the port upwards and the SPL meter on a chair at 6 feet from the box.
No real corner or wall loading. They deserve a 100W plate amp each.
Sound very "dry" and articulate with plenty of weight on organ.
I dumped these when I bought my Mission 753F floor standers.
Then missed the deep bass and bought an SVS cylinder on Ian's advice.
The rest is history.

So next time somebody sneers at bandpass subs you can put them straight.

Nice.

Bandpass designs are good when done right, I have a few BP/TQWTL's up my sleave that I am tempted to try out, more for open air BBQ's parties rather than in home....

He he it was me that convincned you to you look at SVS before Ian J did I was never convinced you were getting the best bass you could out of the bandpass you had.

Really? Then I'm sorry it was Ian who got the blame.

Amazing nearfield response! I may have overstuffed the box a bit but didn't have REW to check this at the time. It might be fun to make a big one with a modern driver! I had no crossover options back then. It sounds better without all the heavily coloured midrange output. Do you know of any free 6th order series design software?

Ooltra Violet, Sunshine. BTW: That's not a girly pink tape measure in your build shots, is it?

It was pure plagiarism! I was copying Dave's fine example. You know how competitive I am. His thread reminded me that I'd never tested my bandpass boxes with REW. I used a borrowed signal generator and graph paper at the time but didn't really believe what was happening. It was fascinating rediscovering this old project with loads of power and modern, active crossover technology.

Re: 6th Order Series Bandpass boxes

I used to not like series bandpass back then but I have come full circle and see the advantages now.

For series tuned designs I use Bass Box Pro 6. It is not free I'm affraid but an excelent program far better than Winisd IMO.

I have a friend doing some very cool custom series tuned bandpass designs for in car market, they are a bit more tricky but can be louder than ported enclosures right across a wider range.

I really need to pull my finger out and build more quirky designs for in home. I have so many good designs not build and tested.

Dont know about Nimby, but I am!. I've got an amp upstairs, the drivers in Cambridge, a couple bits at work and I'm just sat watching everyone build theirs while having to endure a system with no sub.

If you were closer (within driving sensible driving distance) i'd lend you a DIY sub I build 1 month ago. I have Fi Audio SSD 12 in in a 0.62 Qtc 1.7 cubic foot enclosure.

Insanely clean on music, just need a little EQ on the bottom end for movies, more overall output than a SVS SB12.

BassBox Pro6 is $150? Blimey!

It looks very comprehensive though.

Cheers for the offer man. Its just one of those things really, and I got myself here . Just hope it all worthwhile in the end.

Ive not had to get into the box tuning side of things before, what tips if any do you have for that process?

When you say box tuning do you mean making a ported enclosure?
