Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

Hi there

I am trying to look for some fiberfill or something that would be best to put inside my box but I am really struggling to find any.

Any suggestions please?

cheers

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

What exactly is it graham? You said you needed 10lbs so I'm guessing it's much denser and heavier than the BAF wadding you find inside most speakers and subs?

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

That first link looks like B.A.F, Dan, which weighs virtually nothing, I reckon 10lbs of it would fill his living room, with enough left over to make a couple of kingsize 15 Tog duvets That's why I was wondering what this fiberfil actually is...

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

I know what you mean Dave, but I'm not sure the 10lb figure is set in stone. With the less dense stuff you can pack more in as required, but with more dense stuff the reverse isnt possible. There is an article on fibrefill which gives a decent guide as to how much to use and the sort of density to look at.

I think we're really talking about normal acoustic wadding, which in the US they seem to call fibrefill.

EDIT: Your comment just gave me an idea Dave, why couldnt you just get some of those cheap pillows from the supermarket, remove the cases, and then stuff your box with those. Those pillows are cheap and this is probably a much better use for the stuffing in them anyway ,

What do you think?

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

Dan

I read the article you are talking about and that stuff is different to the wadding that is in sheet form. Probably made from the same material polyester but just in sheet form that you fix to the inside walls of the box. The 10lb figure was qouted by FI who have designed my subs. My subs are not your off the shelf kind. They have been modified to suit my requirements for my sub based on what I want out of it. These are hand built to customer specifications hence being tweaked to give me more low end.

I can get the bags of fiberfill from America but not in the UK. Not sure if the pillow thing is the same material but I suppose its worth a go.

cheers

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I think graham should stick to exactly what he is being recommended to use, whatever it is...

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

I like the way its says its good for smaller enclosures . Looks like it will do the job, but it looks no different to cheap pillow or quilt filling. Why not have a look about for a fabric factory shop, the kind of place that makes cushions, curtains etc to order. I bet they'll have a load of this kind of stuff knocking about and will sell if for next to nothing

I know of just such a place near me, so I'm going to go check it out this afternoon before I have to go work tonight. I'll post back if I find anything of use.

You're probably already very familiar with Dacron polyester fiber-fill, or Poly-Fill - there's a high probability you slept on a pillow stuffed with this material last night! But you may not realize how Poly-Fill can help your bass.

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

I just phoned them and apparently the staple fiber fill is denser than the carded. Would a denser fiber fill be better. A 5kg bag is about the size of a dust bin bag.

I just ordered the 5kg carded fibre fill. should get it in a couple of days. Will let you know what it is like.

cheers

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

the US site mentions white fuffy stuff and smooth consistency and from looking at the pictures the carded stuff (it just means it's been combed to get the tangles out and make it fluffier , I think) looks more like it, visually. From an audio point of view, I can't help you there... I suspect either will be fine.

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

I went to the factory shop and they sell the stuff on a roll at a pound a meter. Its a result for me, it seems pretty much identical to the stuff I saw used inside the M&K MX subs.

I think experimentation is the key, and any fibre fill will do the job TBH.

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

Dan,

Well done mate.

It does sound like the sheet stuff. I suppose you can break it up. Not sure if stapling it to the insides does the same as I would have thought the enclosure needs to be stuffed inside the box instead of the sides.

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

A number of designs call for a thin layer around the sides and for that stapled on sheeting would seem to be ideal as Dan has seen inside the M&Ks. Your design would appear to call for a fill it with loose fill approach.

I have visions of you with a lion tamers whip and a chair trying to keep it contained in the box while your assistant screws down the amp panel...

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

The stuff I can get is quite light, and I can just push more in as required. I think Rel squirt a bit of adhesive around the internal sides of the box to hold the stuffing in place around the inside, at least the Strata 2 I just took apart has.

I'm still trying to decide if I should foam line the inside of the box first. Neither Rel, SVS, or M&K do that though so its probably not that needed, but then my sub is going to be bigger than anything Ive had before.

I think all subs are different. FI have advised me to loose fill my box. Not really too sure if it makes much difference.

Re: Fiberfill! Where can you buy it!

The outcome will be interesting, I have to confess that on my ported sub I just bunged a bit of sheet wadding in at the top and left it at that without any testing as to whether it made any difference.

If your happy with the resulting sound though then thats all that matters really. Experimentation is for the overly inquisitive I think.

Just nock on the inside of the empty cabanet and then do a 1/3rd fill and knock again, you will hear a massive reduction in upper refrequnecy relefection and ringing.
