Wood Veneer

Would anyone care to share some good resources for Wood Veneers?

I am not sure what is the best way to go but the 'Iron on' Veneers sound nice and easy, anyone have experience or suggestions on the best method/type?

Iron on Veneer - Specialist Wood Veener by Vale Veneers UK

Thanks.

Re: Wood Veneer

Adam,

I had some samples of flexible veneer sheets that come in 8' x 4' sheets. These you just glue on. I got them from Richard Russel. Look ok but don't really match the furniture. I wonder if you can varnish the light colour ones to darken to match. I am going to ask tomorrow.

Re: Wood Veneer

I had wondered about 'roughing up' plain MDF boxes and then, once settled on a design using pre-veneered MDF.

I can't imagine any subwoofer manufacturers wasting time glueing/ironing MDF and it will give a flawless face without veneer splits/shakes.

Re: Wood Veneer

Just worked out roughly it will cost £300 to buy the iron veneer from that place. Ouch!

The samples I have are paper backed which you glue on in full size. What worries me about the iron on veneer is seeing the joins.

I wonder if the paper backed stuff is decorative veneer.

Take a look at Mundy veneer ltd they have loads of decorative veneers. Not sure how they supply it but am going to call them tomorrow.

Exactly. Two sheets of pre-veneered MDF would stand you in at about £200 without any of the finish issues.

Re: Wood Veneer

I just worked to get decorative veneer it will only cost £60. I think the guy who did the rythmic diy sub used similar veneer and then varnished it and it look he just bought it from a shop.

Just his diy build thread again and he used iron on veneer in oak and then stained it and then finished with teak oil.

Re: Wood Veneer

Just spoken to Vale veneers and they have said all the iron on, decortive and flexible paper back veneers can be stained or varnished so I am going to for the large sheets of paper back stuff which will be much cheaper.

cheers

Do you think there is a risk of 'tearing' the pre-veneered MDF when you route or use a saw? This was what first occured to me when I initially considered it.

I was led to believe applying veneer after cutting the hole for the driver was the best option and then rough cutting out the hole and sanding to the exact size.

From the oracle of subwoofer finishing himself:

Assuming you get no breakout it will be easier and quicker to do the latter, although you will have to be very careful to protect the veneer from vibration scratches from the router base plate.
I am not sure if the risks are reduced depending on the tools but Mr Nimby suggested:

Quote:
The experts say you are supposed to use a 1/4" solid carbide, up cut, router bit for circle' cutting
Which can be had for around £15+ depending on what and where you look.

Some blurb here: Tornado Up-Cut Spiral Router Cutters (TR135) - Buy online from Rutlands.co.uk

This website has a nice visual display of the types of router cut you can achieve: Router Bit Profile Groups

Might be of interest to some wanting a particular finish.

On the subject of finishes, as an alternative to veneer anybody used car paint shops to have their boxes sprayed, does the paint etc work well with MDF to give that perfect pro finish? Any idea of costs e.g. gloss black?

I've worked with veneered chipboard and that is a right bugger, I would hope the much smaller particle size of MDF would make the job that much easier.

bastard was removed from the swear filter so that it could be used legitimately, or should that be illegitimately

f.eckless is one that the swear filter doesn't allow even though it isn't swearing.

getting back on topic, some members have had their boxes gloss sprayed, let me know if you want me to dig up the thread(s) for you MI55ION.

I got pulled up on the use of the above word minus the 'less' and even gained infraction points for its use. I never swear on forum, for there is no need. I can get my blaspheming rocks off in my day to day job in the construction industry where swearing is compulsory.

For the uneducated that thinks it originated with Father Ted and is a way of circumnavigating the swear filter; It was popularized with it's potential double meaning (skillfully employed by Graham Linehan, the writer of Father Ted, The IT Crowd, etc) because it originally meant 'without faith'; Hence Father Ted's use in place of actual swearing.

The first instances of its written use was in the 1600s when the religious connotation was all that was intended and as an insult at that, but has since come to mean lazy, ineffectual, or without commitment. It's only since 'ing' was added to it (thanks Graham and Dermott!) that it became an acknowledged substitute for the more mundane day to day profanity.

It's one of those bizarre swear filter decisions that recognizes the modern (as in, within the last five minutes) corrupted use, rather than what it actually really means. As shown above, I've used a similarly corrupted word that simply means 'assembled on an ad-hoc basis from more than one source', but is never ever used in it's legitimzed sense with the suffix 'ized'. And yet it escapes the filter. Bizzare.
