Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

Bear in mind Stuart usually only starts up a new subsection if there are likely to be 100 people posting in it. Please only vote option 5) if reading about DIY subs in here annoys you
It's a private poll, but feel free to comment on the thread.

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

When I was looking at getting a subwoofer recently my preference would be to build my own, but don't have time. There isn't a really good web resource for this, which surprised me, and I was also very surprised that this site doesn't have a DIY forum, i think it would be more valuable/interesting than others on here. Aw well as beinga resource for people building their own, it would also have the side effect of being a resource for people just interested in certain woodworking techniques eg veneering, painting, cutting etc. Probably not a core avforum subject, but interesting all the same, would increase traffic to the site, and you might get valuable posters spililng over to other fora. So for the reasons above I would say go for it.

2nd that. Otherwise it means going over to the avsforum or hometheatershack to get the information and I personally would rather keep it over here.

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

I remember someone asking for a sub forum quite recently and I could see their point.
I don't really mind either way, but from what I've seen/read on the forums, the 100 posters might be a problem, imo.

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

Keep it as it is. As long as thread titles are suitably descriptive it's fine - makes the forum more diverse, busier and people can dive in when they're a bit bored. It didn't work too well in the photograpy forum a few months ago.

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

There used to be a thriving DIY Subwoofer community in the Home Cinema DIY section but that seems to have disappeared and my guess would be that it disappeared partly due to declining interest in making one's own subwoofer.

To be honest there isn't much about DIY in the subwoofer forum so it seems to be the subject matter that lacks interest and not the position.

On balance I would think that the DIY Forum would be the most appropriate place for DIY threads as the people who lurk there are not only interested in subwoofers but also in the electrical and joinery aspects too

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

Leave as is I reckon. Anyone who's researching a sub purchase might not have considered the DIY option and would probably not have gone into the DIY Home Cinema thread.
If would give them the option to consider a DIY build that they might have been oblivious to otherwise.

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

I vote a seperate forum so that we can have a single point of reference for all threads relating to the custom building of subwoofers, will also be easier for users to search for particular projects or information relating to DIY.

If there is a new diy forum created then i also think a sticky with links to subwoofer software and links to suppliers of subwoofer drivers and parts would be a good idea for the newbie.

I for one have had much sucess in the DIY area and would love to have a seperate forum to offer knowledge to others who want to go down the DIY route.

Regards,
Greg

Re: Should we have a separate subwoofer DIY section?

I had to go to a different forum to build my sub, but my next project is coming soon so I vote for a DIY forum here.
Has to be more popular than the Gadgets and Toys one anyway

Maybe have a general DIY speaker building forum though, rather than just subwoofers.

I see one problem with that statement. HC is DIY for the most part anyway, while specific component construction is not. After subs and speakers how much of the rest of the kit is honestly built from the ground up by people. You cant build a plasma, or a BR player yourself, or an amp etc.

HC as a general field is more general DIY and often includes non av related forms of DIY like woodwork, electrical wiring, furnishings, networking etc.

IMO sub building is a separate field in its own right due to the specific and unique nature of the subject. I would include speaker building but this is taken on much less that sub building due to the complexities involved.

Thats IMHO anyway. That said, I voted for not bothered, because I'm easy either way..

47 voters so far? Had I known there was going to be so much interest I'd have set up an exit poll and hired a couple of mathematicians to analyse the results.

I wonder how many of the voters will commit when it comes to the real sub-forum? These floating voters always revert to type when it come to the crunch.
