Evan Almighty HD-DVD AUS playback problem

Hi,

Can anyone who has Evan Almighty Australian version advise if they have playback problems around the 7:30 mark, when Evan is praying. My HD-XA1 freezes up and I need to eject the disc. The disc is spotless, and freezes in the same place each time.

I have found a few other posts on the net about it freezing, but not sure if that was the US/UK version.

Cheers, Lee

I had a couple of skips on my disc which I watched last night, no freezing though.

EP 30 crashes at 07:40 with 1.1 firmware - wonder what's causing this, i get it on shaun of the dead at 1hr 30 mins approximately as well. It's something Toshiba related, but a fault, or a software error? maybe the drive spins too fast and fails to read some parts of the disc..

Re: Evan Almighty HD-DVD AUS playback problem

Hi Marc,
Yep that's exactly what I experience. At 7:40 it just dies. I'm kind of pleased it's just a duff disc, as I thought my XA1 was playing up. Certainly one disc to beware of.

Cheers, Lee

Re: Evan Almighty HD-DVD AUS playback problem

i'll test again once my HD DVD Rom drive comes, but i have a feeling it might be the Toshiba players rather than the discs, ie they can't read the data off the disc as i've seen people reporting that when using the xbox hd dvd drive to play movies that lock up on the toshiba ones, they dont have any problems..

my theory is that either the laser isn't getting enough voltage, or the drive spins too fast but i'll be able to confirm later in the week

I watched Shaun of the Dead on Saturday night on my EP35 and at the 1hr30m point (exactly as they left the pub and all the shooting starts - is this the bit you mean?) I had big playback issues - picture breaking up and my 605 was changing from DD+ to stereo as it must have lost the signal. Brand new disc from dvdcrave and first time watched. Took it out and cleaned it ( it looked spotless though) but made no difference. I had to fast forward a few seconds and the rest of the movie played fine. My EP35 is firmware 1.3/1.1 or whatever it should be.

Re: Evan Almighty HD-DVD AUS playback problem

just tested on my hd-dvd rom drive, it crashes on that as well so it looks like a faulty batch of discs.

shaun of the dead played fine on the HD-DVD rom drive though

I've got the Aus release of Shaun of the Dead and it plays fine on my E1 (firmware 2.5) but it judders at the 1hr 30min point as well on my new EP30 (originally tested with firmware 1.3 and then again after updating to 2.0).

Therefore this looks like a hardware problem, which I hope Toshiba will fix in a future firmware release.
