Terminator 2 - My HD cherry! ;)

Hi,

So i've just leapt on the deceased band wagon due to the price cuts that are flooding the market. I've gone for the Xbox HD drive and am using it on my Dell 2407 24" widescreen monitor.

I've ordered a bunch of discs but as they were all from abroad i wanted one from this country so i could try it out without having to wait.

So i've picked up the old favourite, Terminator 2 and having popped it in, whirred it up and flicked through some of the chapters, i feel... underwhelmed i think.

Now i know it's an 'old' film and that the picture has always had that washed out sort of look and quite heavy grain in parts to it. But it doesn't seem to reek of hi-defness like i expected.

I'm not really sure what i expect, just a really sharp clear image with no grain (hard on some films as i know its deliberately put there) and a sort of 3D-ness to it i guess?

So i'm just wondering, what should i be expecting with regard to HD and Blu-Ray - the whole HD thing.

Please don't flame me or anything, i'm not saying its bad i'm just not feeling as 'wow' about it as the reviews i read before i bought it. I assume newer films will be sharper due to the modern use of digital effects and mastering and generally being newer films (less time to degrade etc.).

Two other films i have on order are Transformers and Superman Returns both of which i expect to be really sharp and really demo worthy.

So just some thoughts really. Thanks.

You should really be watching on a 42" screen at minimum, otherwise HD is pretty much pointless.

Oh right. Hmmm. Well a friend of mine has a 42" Samsung but i haven't had the opportunity to see it in action yet.

I'm running it all in 1080p (forgot to mention that ) as the monitor outputs that quite happily.

Well if its meant to be on a bigger telly then i'll just have to accept it'll look groovy when i'm able to get one i guess.

Re: Terminator 2 - My HD cherry! ;)

the terminator 2 print is ok but not fantastic. transformers is stunning, different league. Remember the drive just reads data for pq the qual of the monitor, graphics etc are more important. If you got a lcd tv get a cheap ep30 I've got hd dvd drive and the ep30. the ep 30 just stunning!

As for advice on tv head on over to the lcd / plas section

Thanks for your reply, yeh i'm hoping the its the age of the print thats holding this one back and that Transformers will be amazing (cos i love it!! Optimus Prime? Bring it on! )

I don't have an LCD yet just my 24" monitor. I prbably won't be able to get a big Tv until the Mrs (to-be) and i get our own place. Still there's always hope.

Transformers on HD-DVD on my 360 HD-DVD drive and my 40" 720p HDTV looks absolutely amazing, (Best HD-DVD ever, and probably always will be) and it looks even better on my dads 42" 1080p HDTV.

HD needs to we watched on a big HDTV to be appreciated.

Just watch Transformers on a 40"+ HDTV with Surround sound and you'll soon realise what all the fuss is about!

Must admit that while T2 is definitely not in the top 10 of outstandingly detailed HD reference discs,I find it a huge step up from std dvd on my Pana.42" plasma and definitely one of my most prized recent purchases. My wife and I watched it piecemeal over the past couple of days and only finished it a few hours ago.Absolutely brilliant and my wife who never saw it up to now was delighted with it.I highly recommend it and a steal at the price.
