Blu-Ray & 7.1 HD sound - a few concerns
In recent months I notice that more and more Blu-Ray movies are moving toward 7.1 for their leading HD sound tracks.
It may change in the future but, in my current home, there's no way with the layout of my living room I could accomodate 7 speakers.
My first question is that once I upgrade my receiver to handle HD audio (I'm looking at the Sony STR-DG920) how will it deal with say 7.1 PCM audio on a 5.1 system?
It will still allow me to play the PCM track rather than downgrade to DD 5.1 correct? Just with some of the effects missing.
On another note, have many got 7.1 already and who's like me and can't see themselves getting anything more than 5.1 in the near future?

Re: Blu-Ray & 7.1 HD sound - a few concerns
i have the sony 910 and recently went 7.1, and i am very happy with the results, i am pretty sure if you play 7.1 audio on a 5.1 system the amp will just ignore the back surround information, so you will get a 5.1 pcm soundtrack insted of 7.1pcm.

Well that sounds promising.
I searched beforehand, didn't see this specific question answered and 7.1 seems to be a growing trend on Blu-Ray.

Re: Blu-Ray & 7.1 HD sound - a few concerns
the amp will decode it to whatever you ask it to just the same as a dts-es 6.1 discrete on a normal dvd it just plits the sound between the rears nothing will be missing i cant wait to hear the yamaha 11.2 (iirc) amp!
i was looking forward to 10.2 which was rumoured to be released theatrically with the last star wars movie! never happenned though (as of yet) it was going to add an above and a below channel

Nothing missing. I didn't realise the technology in these latest receivers was that clever. Superb.
