Question Blu ray: How does scratches affect them........

.......compared to standard dvds?

I rent dvds from Lovefilm and some freeze due to scratches.

Will blu ray react the same way?

Thanks

unfortunately as blue ray uses a much smaller footprint than conventional dvd this is going to be a major issue, it is also positioned much closer to the the disc
this.it would not of been as much of a problem on hd dvd,as the lens is position further away, but that is another story

Re: Blu ray: How does scratched affect them........

Funny you should say that because I found the total opposite when I used to rent off Lovefilm. I rented 47 Blu- Rays and not one failed to play 100% and then hired 4 Hd-dvd's and only 1 of them played faultlessly, the other three were horrendous, and would either not play at all or just keep breaking up all the time.

This was a problem with the disks to start with (they were originally housed in a cartridge), but was solved (by Phillips, I think) with a very durable coating on the disk's surface.

EDIT: I can't get this youtube clip to embed. Can anyone do it for me?

Yes. I read somewhere that the BD discs are coated in a more durable material than DVD but I can't for the life of me remember where.

Found the following: http://www.durabis.com/en/con00100.htm

It was TDK who developed the new coating (called "durabis").

Re: Blu ray: How does scratched affect them........

I've noticed its easier to mark or scratch a Blu Ray disc than it is an HD DVD.
Not saying i've tried on purpose but i've had a few discs freeze in my PS3, when checking the surface it might just have a smear on it and usually from the disc mechanism as the PS3 drags the disc through the slot. a quick clean and its fine.

Never had any problems with HD DVD. and i thought one of the great things about Blu Ray was it was tougher.
Remember the same being said about DVD

Re: Blu ray: How does scratched affect them........

i remember when CDs came out and the guy in the shop demo-ing smeared jam on the printed surface announcing that they were indestructible, however when i asked if the disc played on both sides he went a bit, so i asked him to smear jam on the other side to which he refused as he did not want to get jam on his player needless to say his sales patter left him feeling as i walked out of the door

Re: Blu ray: How does scratched affect them........

Hmmm, I own nearly 100 BD movies and not one of them has is scratched even slightly. The only discs that have any marks on them are the two DVDs from the US Blade Runner 5-disc DVD/BD set.

I order my movies online and on more than one occasion the discs have come loose in the post but none have ever arrived with so much as a scratch on them. Unlike DVDs!

/remembers the Halo 3 Collector's Edition fiasco

My sister even bought me Halloween on BD for Christmas but knowing how fussy I was about looking after my movie discs warned me that she thought the disc was loose before I opened my present on Christmas Day. I just laughed, shook the box to confirm it - she absolutely looked mortified - then opened it and showed her that the disc didn't have a scratch on it! If that had been a DVD it would have had scratches all over it.

Seems to me that while BDs are not entirely scratch-proof - I'm sure I could mark them if I tried - they're certainly more scratch-resistant than DVD or HD DVD. I couldn't be happier as I no longer have to worry about the discs coming loose in the post now for my movies or PS3 games!
