Lord of the Rings coming out on HD DVD?
I have read in an old Home Cinema magazine ( by the makers of What Hi Fi) that the Lord of the Rings Trilogy will come out on HD DVD eventually. Is this true?
If this is true is it worth it to buy the Xbox 360 HD DVD add-on even though I have the Arcam DV79 DVD player? I am a Lord of the Rings fan.

Toshiba have it on the front of their HDDVD website with the words coming soon underneath it.
As far as the picture quality goes then yes it will be better!

Will have to be eh?
Sure apart from Sony, the Lord of the Rings franchise advertising was one of the biggest ever seen, wasn't it?

If you'd done a search for this you'd have seen a multi page thread on this within the last week.
And ask yourself - is it likely that a blockbuster will come out "eventually" - of course it is!!
The issue for New Line is - why restrict yourself to a very small user base, when if you wait 18 months or so you'll hopefully shift millions, on both formats.

Re: Lord of the Rings coming out on HD DVD?
As I understand, the Lord of the Rings Trilogy will only be available exclusively for HD DVD and not Bluray?

Nobody knows whether New Line will support one format or both because they haven't made any announcements on the subject.
All they have publicly said so far is that they are evaluating the situation and will make a decision next year.

Unlikely. New Line havent announced any titles yet and/or which format(s) they intend to support. As they are controlled by Warner (which support both formats equally) - the odds are on the films being released on both formats.

If it comes out it will be released by Fox, a Blu Ray exclusive studio.

Re: Lord of the Rings coming out on HD DVD?
If both formats live in harmony then BIG titles will no doubt be released on both.
IMHO

Which kind of adds into the "why the bloody hell do we need formats in the first place?" arguements.

If the DVD releases of Star Wars are anything to go by then we should have HD discs out by 2011ish!

At least we will also therefore, eventually have at least seven different HD versions of the box sets!

I know the horse is dead, but I flog it some more...
We of course don't need two formats. The rights holders - patents et al. - do. More money if you can lock others into your portfolio.
I did notice that the EU competition commision said it would be keeping an eye on how consumer electronics companies deal with open and transparent licensing of the two technologies; this implies that the EU wants to make sure there will be a path for dual-format boxes - but only if some format-independent manufacturer jumps in.

I think dual format is probably on all the major CE company roadmaps. We already know that LG and Samsung both have discussed the possibility at a corporate level - and ditto Pioneer. Furthermore the highend companies - Arcam, Denon, Marantz etc - all favour dual format for obvious reasons.
