Hd Dvd?
Is there any High Definition DVD's available yet? I have a Panasonic AE700 projector and an HDMI Pioneer DV S969AVi player and wanted to see how good it could really look? Lots of the DVD's still look pretty poor even with good equipment.

If you want to use HD DVD or Blu Ray you will need a new player. HDDVD Disks wont work with current DVD players. No matter how new they are or if they use DVi or HDMI.
Its a different format. Blu Ray being the superior format.

Isn't Terminator 2 (R1) High Def? Also Island Fever 3 (adult XXX) is the first true Region 0 Hi Def disc.

Craig. I beleive the source for the DVD is Hi def, but I dont think they could actually fit the entire high def movie on a DVD because it would need more space. Hence the need for Blu Ray and HD DVD.
In reality there shouldnt be a need to change the format, but like I said, there simply isnt enough space on a DVD to fit a fully HD movie plus all the extras and a DTS/DD mix.
Its cheaper in the long run to have a new format.

AML,
T2 HD, Island Fever 3 and quite a few more (mostly IMAX) titles are encoded in Microsoft's VC-9 codec - recently renamed SMPTE VC-1 for use on HD DVD and Blu-ray. They run at lower bitrates to stay under DVD's red laser limit of 10Mbps. For next gen blue laser, they should be using rates of around 16Mbps. Hope this helps.

A german site has Underworld, Timeline, The Italian Job, the two Lara Croft films and a few others up for order. Also, Amazon.de (Search for "WMV-HD") has most of them, they work out a bit cheaper too. They are all 720P.

Do the german releases (assuming they are proper region 2 German releases, not the imported Region 1 versions) require that the disk is registered online before it can be played in your PC?

I think the DRM is on the DVD so you don't go online. A bit like the BMW 'The Hire' shorts on 'Do Amazing Things XP', or those 'Corel Adventure With Space Dolphins' Imax DVD things. As to what the DRM checks on your system, I'm not entirely sure, but at a guess I think it would play on any PC (that satisfies the hefty processing requirements to ensure you don't end up in flick-book land). Maybe worth waiting until someone confirms though.

WMV-HD DVD's?
Will the WMV-HD disks play HD through my Panasonic 700 and my Pioneer DV S969AVi player with HDMI. I can play through HDMI in 720p and 1080i. Interested in seeing true HD to test the setup.

They won't I'm afraid. I guess I saw mention of T2 and the fact that it's WMV-HD got me talking about these new releases, and made me forget about the fact that you're not going to be using a PC. I hear the Kiss DP-600 will play WMV-HD. I don't know of any other HD material on a normal DVD.
