Poor picture quality

I've relocated my aerial to the highest point of my roof so as to get a better line of sight to Winter Hill (36km away) but I still have poor picture quality, with pixilation and freezing of the image.

I've started trouble shooting the problem and need some advice - my aerial coax is routed close to the incoming overhead power supply. Will the power supply interfere with the signal and if so how much separation do I need?

I could be worth using sat grade cable which has better screening but I very much doubt if that will make a lot of difference, your symptoms are usually as a result of not enough signal.

If you put your postcode in here and post what aerial is recommended then may be able to help more.

Winter Hill needs C/D aerial or a log periodic wideband if you have enough signal and you may also need to fit a mast head amp. Log periodics have excellent interference rejection a flat gain curve but don't work very well in fringe areas due to lack of gain.

Re: Poor picture quality

I believe DSO begins at midnight tonight, so any decisions about aerials may be better left until DSO is completed. This website has details of DSO at Winter Hill...

Re: Poor picture quality

I've checked and I have to correct aerial and its pointing in the right direction.

My aerial cable be zip tied to the incoming overhead 240 volt power cable which is clipped to the gable end wall from the roof line to ground level as this was the easiest option for the installer. Will the 240 v interfer with the signal?

Re: Poor picture quality

running parallel with mains is bad practice, you maybe overloading the tuner with to much signal due to the masthead gain.

DTT should be between 45 and 65 db.

if you are only 36k away from winterhill and with clear line of site a very low gain amp is needed (proceptions 4db is ideal) i use loeads of them.

Re: Poor picture quality

Have heard that BBC have also massively reduced the bitrate of BBC channels on Freeview as well on this particular transmitter by around 40% to make way for HD broadcast, so picture quality is now pretty mushy by all accounts?
