Tacolneston Transmitter

I came past the Tacolneston (Norfolk) transmitter yesterday and noticed that work has actually started on the new mast. The mast as it stands now is about two-thirds the height of the existing one so it is well on its way to full height.

It is noticable much stronger than the present mast the lattice steelwork makes the mast look twice as wide as the existing one.

Work began on Monday 28th September and is due to last around 4-5 weeks. Within the first week the new mast stood around 70metres tall. As of the end of last week it stood at around 100-110metres tall. An inspection cage is attached to the current in-use mast. Once the new mast build is finished, it is planned to install the DTT antenna system at the top of the new mast. That's about all I can tell you off the top of my head at this early hour.

Oh, BTW, the new mast will be 190m tall, but with the new DTT antenna system surmounting the mast, the total height will rise to 206.1m.

Re: Tacolneston Transmitter

Pity is that we will still have to wait until 2011 for switchover.
