I thought going digital was meant to be progress..

I currently have a standard aeriel linked into a box in the loft that feeds TV's in 5 different rooms so different channels can be viewed on each. I have got digiboxes on each TV but cant get any ITV digital channels on any TV and the reception on the other non BBC digital channels is only any good about 11'o clock at night so we end up not using the digiboxes much.

It is due to switch over completely to digital in our area in November and I think I will be left with very poor, limited TV after then. I have looked at Freesat but that cant be distributed to 5 different rooms so each room can watch different channels easily so I dont know what my options are. Any help please

Will digital signal not boosted once the analogue signal is switched off?

Hi
Are you in a freeview zone?
It might be your aerial that the problem, if you can, hook up a tv to the main aerial coax (not through the distribution box) and look at page 284 on BBC or ITV text there is a test pattern which will enable you to see if your aerial is ok for freeview.

Don't be fooled into thinking digital freeview tv is better, its not. To my eye's the picture is where sky was in 1990 :-), going from watching a HD dvd or for that matter SD dvd to freeview is upsetting.

Ok, I'll try and hook a TV up to the main coax.

I forgot to say that I did get the ITV channels originally but the signal was very poor. After running reinstalls to find new channels or better signal strength (hopefully) I lost all the ITV channels, Channel 4, more 4, etc.

Where I live is on the English and Welsh border but I can get all the terrestrial english and welsh channels i.e BBC 1, BBC 1 Wales, C4, S4C, ITV Wales, ITV Central etc.

What is the point in going digital if it is not an improvement on what I have already got?

The point in going digital is that one uhf channel can carry just one analogue channel or lots of digital TV and radio stations (the more they squash onto the 1 uhf carrier the worse the ultimate quality). After the current analogue channels are switched off digital tv can increase it's power output as it won't interfere with existing analogue transmissions. Consider freesat it's designed to provide similar channels as freeview but can be recieved in most locations.

I'd get an aerial specialist in to check if you need a new aerial and/or realigning to the correct transmitter for your area.

My mother told me she saw it again after I had done her PVR but I pointed out it's being broadcast as part of the programming not being generated by the TV or STB on the off chance some people haven't retuned yet.

Re: I thought going digital was meant to be progress..

Sorry if this is not related but when analogue goes I assume the ability to record 5 channels as you can now will also go as the freeview or freesat can't be programmed to change whilst you are not about.

Welcome

It depends upon the functions the set top box of TV software provides if you are still using a VCR or DVDr connected via scart.

In this day and age though the twin tuner PVR is the best solution and with integrated tuners and EPG there is no easier way to record or watch digital broadcasts.

Re: I thought going digital was meant to be progress..

Thanks for that. Gives me something else to look into now. Currently have Panasonic HD TV with freewiew built in ;Panasonic dvd.vcr hard drive recorder and Humax freesat box. Can't get the the TV to autorecord freeview channels but otherwise managing to get by recording via freesat and analogue channels.
Thanks again.

It sounds like you're getting signals from more than one transmitter. It's possible that the receiver is storing the first signals it finds, not necessarily the strongest ones. You need to find which transmitter provides the best signals and do a manual scan on those frequencies.

Re: I thought going digital was meant to be progress..

I'll look into that thank you. Is there such a thing as a twin freesat tuner ? ie one without a built in recorder. I already have a Humax single freesat tuner and a Panasonic hard drive vcr/dvd recorder so don't want to buy for example a Humax twin tuner with hard drive. Or could I buy a twin freeview tuner which would override the single tuner in the Panasonic TV?

A twin tuner device without a recorder would be pretty pointless unless it had two seperate sets of outputs one for each tuner. It would be cheaper to buy two boxes.
