New APS-C Compact from Sony?

Sonyalpharumors have a rumour that Sony are doing a new compact camera with APS-C sensor.

Linky

twist 21-02-2012 11:58 AM

I think they should bring out loads more cameras and less lenses.

..they're doing it to bring out some that are compatible with Sigma lenses :devil:

the interesting thing is the mention of a zoom pancake lens... quite why sony felt the need to stick a body to it instead of a e-mount is well sony i suppose

That's the bit that puzzles me. But isn't the "problem" with NEX and pancakes to do with flange distance or someint? Don't ask me, I just read it once and it hurts my head. :p

if that were the case for NEX and presumably it not a problem for the likes of samsung NX and m34 etc then all that's stopping sony is adding a few mm to their lenses (like you would with a lens adapter).

Not sure but I suspect the problem is sony being morons rather than actual technical limitations

That'll be the problem, they'll not be able to make a 30mm (or whatever) pancake without making it too long/large. It isn't then a compact pancake and rather defeats the whole point of it. :grin:

So NEX offers the advantage of putting practically any lens on the front, but not if you want compactness. Maybe this compact will be Sony's answer to that problem?

well if was a pancake for a SLR yes, but not for a mirrorless system like samsung. I can assure you the samsung combo with it's 30mm pancake is pretty compact. In any case I'm confident there's no technical limitation just stupidity or deafness on sony's part

let me start again

sony NEX has a 18mm flange - supposedly this makes it hard or impossible to make pancakes for it

micro 4/3 has a flange of 20mm and samsung NX has a 25.5mm flange - yet they have pancake lenses - if it was just about flange distance then all we're talking about is adding 2-7.5mm to a pancake lens to make it work on NEX.

So if the Samsung 30mm pancake is 21.5mm long, the Sony version would be getting on for 30mm? Bit chunky.

well still a huge improvement on the kit lens but as i say it's probably not the actual reason why sony hasn't been releasing pancake lenses
