Just got my Nikon D60

Just got my Nikon D60 for my birthday and i love it !! just snapping off a few shots on auto and its amazing. Now looking to really get into the manual modes and working on shutter speads etc... got it with the nikon dx af-s nikkor 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G VR is this a good beginner lense ?

the main question i have is is there a good beginners book i could pick up for the D60 and what accessories should i get (got a Altus 160 case with it and a Sandisk 4gb card) i have got £80 to spend

Books: Understanding Exposure (Amazon & cheap), well worth a read.

Tripod? But don't scrimp as you will regret it later. Then start saving for a bigger bag

Get a UV or skylight filter to protect your lens, also the best accessory I bought was a SB400 flash, in bounce mode indoor photos look like they where taken perfect daylight. should be able pick one up S/H within your budget.

I found the "Understanding Exposure" book a bit of a pain to get into and have still only read a couple of pages of it since christmas!!!!!

I got a book by david busch off amazon about the D60 much easier reading than the bundled manual to find your way around the camera BUT it does not teach you photography alas

Still good though and fits in the front pouch of my backpack

Really? I could not stop reading it. Found it very easy to understand and a massive help. Finished reading it the other day and will deffo read it again in a few months time.

Totally agree with you and glad i only borrowed it from the library, bit of luck his missus was quite pleasing on the eye

Time is hard to find

The moral here is that while you cant learn photography from a book. You can persevere and find that the books help you to not need to discover some things the hard way ( ie reinventing the "wheel")
One way to use them is to take lots of lots of photos , analyse them , then read the book in bite sized periods rather than try and read them back to back if you cant do that
There is no substitute for taking as many as you can..You wont always feel like , but it will come back

PS: Id previosly only browsed it bt to day found myself in Waterstones (Uxbridge) found a copy fo £12.99 and have had a skim ..
To me it reads very easily and had color photos plastered all over to ease the reading
I guess Books these days are facing competition from the internet and You tube videos!

but still IMHO remain a valuable resource for " Edutainment"
