450D Remote Control Problem

I have a 450d, and have recently purchased a remote from eBay, the same as this one;

Remote Control for CANON 450D XSi 400D XTi 350D JESSON on eBay, also, Remote Controls, Digital Camera Accessories, Photography (end time 26-May-09 03:37:43 BST)

I've been messing with it for around 40 minutes, and cant seem to get it to work. I've put the camera onto timer/remote mode, and pointed the thing everywhere I can think there might be a receiver.... but nothing happens.

Is it likely I've been sold a dud or am I missing something abvous?

Re: 450D Remote Control Problem

The receiver is on the front just inset from the hand grip sort of a frosted looking window. Might ust be a dead battery in the sender. I have one I got off evilbay with a gazzillion more buttons although only the 2 work but it is a bit hit and miss sometimes.

Re: 450D Remote Control Problem

I've just taken the remote to a friends house who has a 350D, and the remote worked perfectly with his camera....which really worries me.

I've had a look in my 450d manual, and as you mention it indicates the remote sensor to be on the right hand side. To me it doesnt look like glass or any kind of IR receiver.... especially after comparing it to the one on my friends 350D, which is quite obviously glass/perspex.

Its not possible I have a 450d without a remote sensor is it?

Re: 450D Remote Control Problem

It's this...

The other thing in set is the light that flashes for 2 second countdown etc.

I just tried mine and it wasn't playing ball until I put it in timer/remote and took a shot manually with the button. It could be it doesn't think it's focussed as well, try in ai servo mode.

Re: 450D Remote Control Problem

As above, but it's not stupidly sensitive. I've managed to bounce IR off the walls pointing it at the back and stuff. Hopefully that's the problem though!

If not, I'm selling a official Canon RC-1 if you're interested.

Re: 450D Remote Control Problem

I have the RC-1 for my 450D works a treat, i had trouble at first until i realised how to set it up properly.

first there are 2 modes on the unit

if pointing IR Led away from you it is "off-instant-2second" not off in the middle as the diagram shows.

then there is remote mode to set in the camera. its the middle option only that says self-timer/remote (press timer button for menu)

and speed of picture (bulb mode will let you open mirror with one press, close with second)

after they are set, it you are taking a picture from behind the camera your best bet is to poke your hand around the shutter button side and aim back at the hand grip.

sorry if im teaching you to suck eggs but it was the best fiver i have ever spent!

oh if it helps i always use manual focus
