Basic Lens for 400D

I'm looking for a lens for my 400D which is suitable for carrying around all day instead of my rather bulky & heavy Sigma 18-200 zoom.

I love my Sigma, and it's fine most of the time, but, for example, I'm planning to spend all day today walking round London, and am going to find it a bit cumbersome.

What I'm looking for is the lightest and smallest standard lens of at least reasonable quality, preferably sub-£100.

The one I've got my eye on is the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II, which Amazon have for about £80.

Any comment gratefully received.

Many thanks

the canon 50mm is what I would go for if your looking for a small lens for under £100. Or if you wanted to save money you could go for the canon standard kit lens 18-55, but I would stick to the 50mm .

The 50mm is light and sharp but for every day walk about use, I would suggest you limit yourself to 50mm on the 18- 200 and see if you can live withthat focal length fixed
If not you will find it limiting and may need to get the Kit 18-55 IS

Re: Basic Lens for 400D

I've tried to use a 50mm f1.8 as a walkaround. It would be pretty bad for shooting in a city I reckon.

I'd second a 18-55IS on a budget.

If you want a prime, I'd say something around 28-35mm would be good for street shooting, but not so hot for buildings.

Re: Basic Lens for 400D

Thanks, guys.

I'd ruled out any type of zoom/IS lens on the grounds of probable weight, but the 18-55IS is only 200gm, compared with 130gm of the 50mm, and over 600 for my Sigma, so it's a definite possible.

I'll give 'em both a try.

Had a good day out yesterday, but I did find lugging the Sigma around for 5 hours a bit of a trial.
