help with raw please...

my 40D arrived today, and I took some shots in RAW. When it come to downloading and opening in RAW shooter it says it cant open as file may be in use by another program

Any thoughts - there nothing else open

I've come across this before, try this thread, it could be you need to uninstall Microsoft Desktop Search.

Digital Photo Professional, it comes on the CD with the camera.

ah, no using Raw shooter which I think came with my 350D - I used on Raw on that yesterday with no problems.

Downloading all other formats open fine.

I'm quite surprised to hear that Raw Shooter came with any Canon camera. Still, we learn something new every day. Very simply, the 40D was released long after the 350D and introduced a completely new raw format, including 14 bit files, which simply won't be understood by software pre-dating the 40D. Just download the latest versions of Canon's DPP software from the Canon website and install it. You may be prompted to insert your CD to validate your entitlement to use the software.

Google's free Picasa software should also be able to read 40D raw files, as should Raw Therapee. Then there is paid for software like Lightroom to consider. DPP will at least get you started at no cost.

Thanks for replies, I did a search and downloading now, camera arrived at work and left disks there by accident

Think Raw shooter may have come on a magazine.

Canons come with DPP.. not Rawshooter..

If your DPP is " broken" reinstall it and update but note that the latest version only works with XP with Sp2 or Vista
