I think you need to specify a budget.
From what you've written, it's fairly easy to suggest the 450D twin lens kit (18-55 IS & 55-250 IS), but that might be way out of your price range.

I can't really say much about the Pentax, but I had a feeling that the K10D had been superseded.
IIRC It has got a weatherproof body though, whereas the Canon doesn't.

go to a shop and handle them all , you could buy the most expensive camera in the world , but if it feels wrong then ...... , the canon 1000d felt the best to me compared with a d60 and a200

Ahoy!

Did you cross-reference the K10D against the Samsung GX-10? Same body/mount, just different button layout and menu @ £319.00 with kit lens or £355.00 for twin lens kit from Park Cameras (maybe cheaper elsewehere).

Ahoy!

You did VERY well with your purchase . And yes they are almost identical.

Pentax is branded for the European market and the Samsung version for the Asian market. Different sized hands and fingers and brand recognition (it's true). A bit like Vauxhall in the UK and Opel in Europe, though Pentax is better recognised here than Samsung and vice versa in Asia, so when shopping around, you're likely to find the Sammy cheaper than the Penty, though they are essentially identical.

Olympus/Panasonic share the 4/3 mount, Sony/Minolta the A-mount, Samsung/Pentax the K-mount, so it's becoming more common to have different brands collaborating and sharing mounts.

Here endeth the lesson
