Sigma teleconverters?

Toying with the idea of getting either the 1.4 or 2x to use on my 70-200 to gain a bit more length when needed, but have read that the 2x can be a bit soft. Anyone using either of these on a Nikon got any thoughts on the performance aspects, pros and cons etc.

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

Hello there

Paul, as you know not using a Nikon, but am using a 70 - 200mm with 1.4 and 2x converter.

All my shots on Sunday had either on.

I haven't really had a problem with them, you got to hold it steadier when you got the 2x on because this is making the lens zoom upto 400mm, and it does make it a bit harder in low light because the biggest aperture is f5.6.

Apart from that I think its a good option.

Cheers Holo

1.4 is fine, 2x lacks colour/contrast and produces softish image

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

Thanks guys

Holo, I did remember that you had one, but i wasnt sure if the perfromance differed much from Canon to Nikon. WE still has them for a reasonable price at the moment too.

Well we shall see, as ive just ordered one

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

Depends on what you are shooting but you will be ok with a 1.4x TC, no problem at all. Personally, I would never use a 2x on a zoom, any zoom, primarily for the reason that AF becomes very very slow and the resulting image quality is poor, but saying that, it depends on what you are looking to do with the images, web resolution will be fine. For any moving subject, a 2x and a zoom, just won't cut it.

Paulie - I was also using my Sigma 2x on Sunday along with the 120-300. I am very happy with both the 1.4 and 2x.

Maybe at the next meet...

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

I have both for my SIgma 70-200mm and am more than happy with them.
Under the right conditions both work very well.

Hi John no offense meant, I was in a rush at work so my answer was short and sweet.

My experience with the 2x on the 70-200 was good to a point, however when pushed up near 200mm and shot at F5.6 is was lacking. Push it to say F11 and things got a little better however in less than perfect light conditions you have the ago old problem of shutter speeds, so you end up pushing up the ISO to gain it back.

1.4x. End of . . good night!

Had Sigma 1.4x with Sigma 100-300mm EX APO. Perfect combo. Regarded as the better of the two. Full AF and much thinner than the 2x.

Mine was used on Sony, but I'm sure if you've done your research, you'll come to the same conclusion.

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

Will the sigma 1.4 work with the Canon EF 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM on a 450d or would people recommend the canon one?

Re: Sigma teleconverters?

So the canon one would be fine right? I see I can get the 2x slightly cheaper than the 1.4x would people still recommend the 1.4x?
