Re: d80 or d90

The d90 is obviously the newer model, and has better/newer features. Also, iso noise is apparantly less of a problem on the d90 than the d80. Although the d80 is a good camera also, but do you want to spend that much money on older technology? If you think you could live with the features of it, then get it and save the money towards a new lens. If you would prefer to get the newer technology and don't mind spending the little extra, then go for the d90... Well, that's my take. But ensure you go for a play in the shops to see which one feels best to you...

Re: d80 or d90

I faced the same choice a few months ago when I decided to upgrade from the D50.

In the end I let my heart rule my head and went for the D90 with 18-105VR kit. The main reasons were the High ISO capability and large high res LCD. Getting the more up to date technology hopefully will mean I won't have to upgrade for a good few years. So far I have not regretted this decision

OTOH, if you can get a D80 at a good price and some nice fast glass to go with it, this will cancel out the high ISO advantage. If the other features of the D90 do not interest you, this is probably a more sensible approach.

They both feel exactly the same as the D90 uses the same body.

Re: d80 or d90

I had the same choice recently, decided to go for a D80 mainly down to the value for money aspect. However, after a trip to Bristol zoo a couple of weeks ago trying to shoot indoors in rubbish light I was dissapointed at how noisy the pics were coping out at ISO400 and 800 (using a 70-200VR).

If I were making the choice again I'd go for a D90...

Re: d80 or d90

In DPReview's review of the D90, they do a side by side feature comparison between D80 and D90 (scroll down a bit).

Re: d80 or d90

The D80 is a bit more adavanced than the D40 (can autofocus non AFS lenses etc) but the overall picture quality really won't be any different beyond the MP count. With the D90 the picture quality will be significantly better due to the new gen sensor allowing less noise, hardware d-lighting etc.

- If you want a D40 that feels bigger and meatier that can autofucs non AFS glass get the D80.
- If you want the above plus a significant step up in picture quality, especially in low light get the D90. Very useful for telephoto shooters who can never get enough light in their lense and need to boost the ISO. If you're wide angle only, then this is less of an issue.
