It's arrived!!!!

Posh new D700! To say excited doesn't even begin to cover it! Just the lens to arrive tomorrow.

And one problem.........

I now need some free software to convert the RAW files!! I'm on PS7 and I'm pretty certain it won't handle any RAWs.

Any suggestions?

That's what I thought, however looking at it....

"You are eligible for this promotion if you have purchased a New Nikon D700 between 01/11/08 and 31/01/09. For full terms and conditions please click here"

Bit of a bugger. Should've looked into it a bit more!!

Hang on - is that Photoshop Elements 7? In which case you can download a file from the Adobe site that will allow you to handle NEFs.

Why not get onto Adobe and download a 30 day free trial of the programme of your choice - Elements/Lightroom/CS.

You're less than a week out, worth while giving it ago? Even try ring up Nikon UK or whoever, say you camera was delayed by the snow......

When i got my D300, the Capture NX was all in, no fuss, no promotion. I thought it would be standard when your paying well over £1500!

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Hi,

if you don't want to pay a lot of money for conversion from RAW, why don't you give RAWSHOOTER a try :

Photo-Freeware.net - Starting the download

I have been using it a lot, and was quite happy with it. But now, Silkypix came with my new camera (G1) and that feels more userfriendly.

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Worth a call definitely, I quite like Capture NX 2 I upgraded recently and they've certainly improved a few things on the speed front like altering the white balance and D-Lighting which could take ages to update on version 1. Shame you've got PS7 and not PS8 (CS) you could have upgraded to CS4 for £160.

Re: It's arrived!!!!

The ViewNX that came with the camera is not too bad, it can read the camera settings and apply them to the nef. Capture NX2 can too, but none of the non Nikon software can do this apart from WB. ViewNX cannot crop though and it is not very user friendly IMO.
Picasa 3 is free, user friendly and handles most raw files including D700. It is what I use on my laptop when I am away from my PC with Lightroom 2.

Re: It's arrived!!!!

I'm still waiting for my D700, there seems to be a shortage across the UK. I was planning to call Nikon up when the camera arrived to see if I was still able to get the NX2 deal.

It does seem a bit unfair, the suppliers are saying that Nikon aren't shipping units over due to the low value of the pound and they can't tell me when they are expecting any new shipments

If you do decide to call them, please let us know how you got on

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Ordered from Warehouse Express, A D700 with the 105mm VR lens kit, plus other bits. They still list it as low stock on their web site, unlike the other D700 bundles which are all on back order.

I placed the order over the phone and that's when they told me they don't have any and Nikon won't / can't give then an ETA of new stock.

Their words were "It could be one week or two months, we just don't know"

Grrrrrrrrreat

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Litch, try waltersphotovideo.

I got messed about no end by Park cameras saying they had stock, then didn't etc.

Walters had one in and it came in no time.

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Thanks Manic78,

The D700 is part of a larger order from WHE, so I'll have to wait for now. I called up a few other places (can't / won't trust the online stock levels) but it's the same story, unless I want to pay an extra £200

patience patience

Re: It's arrived!!!!

Well I'm going to have to praise Warehouse Express, yesterday they've offered to ship me a D700 body with my order and send the lens when it comes back into stock.

Apparently Nikon has stopped supplying the D700 & 105mm vr lens kit so they are completing Kit orders themselves.

As of 10am this morning its been sitting on my desk, pleading with me to play with it

Now to harass Nikon in to supplying NX2 for free
