Loose end on a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens

I have just picked up a 2nd hand canon lens (as per title) and I *think* the end of the lens is loose.

If anyone else has one of these lenses could they let me know if its slightly loose ?

I'm not sure if its just me being paranoid.

Thanks!

Mark

:BUMP:

I just came across this discussion:

Canon 28-135 IS USM lens on 10D front end loose?

Can anyone else confirm if this is the case on theirs ??

Thanks!

It does seem to be normal as I took it to a local camera shop in Chester and they said its totally normal. They showed me a brand new one thats never been out of its box and that was loose also.

Surprising as my other Tamron is nice and tight.

Re: Loose end on a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens

the explanation i got was so that the motor does not need to struggle to turn a tight lens , my opinion , it is a price point thing so the lenses can be built down to a price , might be wrong on that though

Re: Loose end on a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens

Just thought I'd bring this thread up, since I have just received the 55-250 that paul's on about in this thread, and was a bit worried, as to me it seems very loose. My 18-55 is hardly moves in comparison, but does have a little bit of play... So I was a little bit worried... Although if paul says he took it to his local independant, then I guess all's ok. Just wonder what other's opinions are?

Also, I noticed that the motor is a lot noisier than on my 18-55mm. I was shocked to hear the noise of it so loud. Compared it to my 18-55, and that is a whisper. Any other's opinions on the motor noise? Could it be that it's so noisy because of the looser end?

Re: Loose end on a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens

Do you mean the IS motor noise is louder ? I thought my 55-250 was broke too when I got it but I subsequently found out that is a common thought with this lens and it's nothing to worry about. The focus motor is perhaps a little noisier too.

From recollection there is more play in the barrel too than on my 18-55, so that is probably ok too.

Good luck,

John

seems as though it is a common thing , i have just got the 70-300 IS and the IS is noisy in a quiet room , takes sharp pictures though , and that suits me

Cheers, at least I know the is noise factor is no prob then

What about the play on your 18-55 compared to the 55-250 John? Is this about the same, or does your 18-55 have less play than the 55-250? Cheers

Re: Loose end on a Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 USM Lens

I stand corrected - the 18-55 actually has *more* play in it than the 55-250, especially given that it doesn't extend as far so I would have excpected it to perhaps be more snug. In comparison, the 18-55 feels like it's about to fall apart, whereas the 55-250 just feels a bit loose

The IS on the 55-250 is definitely more noisy though - I was right on that one.

John
