Stupid Question Time re Tripod heads

When I first go my camera I bought a cheap £5 tripod with the camera screwy thing attached.
So my question is this. When you buy a tripod without a head and a seperate head what does the head attach to? Can i get a quick release attachment for my tripod Or should I just bite the bullet and put a more expensive one on my list of things I want but the wife'll kill me for buying?

Re: Stupid Question Time re Tripod heads

The tripod legs have a screw sticking out of the top and the head has a thread on the bottom - the two just screw together.
