Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

We are having more than a page full of posts here every day which is very encouraging.
I think it's time to reorganise.
How would you like the Digital Photography forums to be reorganised?
Would it be a good idea to have sub forums for Cameras and Accessories, How to take photos (for discussion and tips on how to be a good photographer) and Photo Editing (for discussion on how to manipulate the photos)? Is there a need for the Photo Album forum for people to share photos? Or is the forum photo album facility (in your control panel) sufficient?

I'll throw my hat in to the ring and say a sub forum for lenses would be a nice addition.

Possibly also camera bodies and another for editing.

I think those sub forums sound like a good idea

There is probably going to be a lot of overlap between the latter two - maybe they could be combined into one - "Photographic Technique & Post-Processing" or something.

First off can I say, thanks for all the effort in this Stuart and the whole forum.

I will most probably go against the grain here, but I like it how it is, its like one big melting pot.

I think if you start to split it up, peeps will start to miss posts.

Unless we get a Swan subforum

I must admit, subforums does suggest too me that we could miss bits, as it is it is brilliant how one minute you can be talking about someones holiday pictures then a minute later having an in depth discussion about editing or sports or anything.

I like it as it is

My experience in the PS3 forum is this. Before the PS3 was released there was only one forum and as it grew it evolved and had loads of different sub forums.

The advantage of this is that it's a lot easier to find threads on what you want to discuss. This goes for both newer members and more established ones. It takes a bit of getting used to but I think it's time the photography forum evolved a bit. There's so many people getting in to photography now with the price point of DSLR's it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Re: Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

In my opinion there need to be a separate photo discussion subforum - basically where photos are displayed. These wouldn't then be swamped by other threads as they are now.

Cameras, lenses and assorted hardware and photo editing discussions should be in the main photo forum.

Perhaps people could be allowed to have more than one Photo Album, each with a separate topic.

The forum photo album facility (in the control panel) is quite basic and I doubt it it will be used much if at all. The number and size of pictures small and the potential audience size is also very small compared to sites like flickr.

I agree, but there are so many new threads every day that some get missed as things are now.

If it has to be split up, then I'd vote for a fairly simple split, something like [photos & editing] and [gear talk]. Having lots of sub forums to navigate makes it hard work jumping about all over the place, like on POTN.

I think I agree with this, but for swans substitute pussy cats .
If it must be sub-divided then I suppose an equipment subforum, and a photographs subforum (i.e. the results) might do the trick.

I think the keener and more regular contributors prefer to link to their images on photo hosting sites without resizing. Maybe this could be sorted out as well, assuming it is possible. If you see some interesting pictures you can go and see a few more by the same author, which I think increases the value and usefulness of the forum.

Cheers, Malcolm

Re: Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

I think it's a good idea to split it down but i think we need to keep them down to a few as if there are too many people won't visit all of them

General Photo Chat
Equipment Forum - Bodies, Lenses, Tripods, Bags etc
Photo Critique - For photo sharing and for people who want feedback on their pics
Tutorials - Links to sites with tutorials or ones which people have put together themselves

Re: Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

I'm not too sure whether or not I like the idea of a split but if it was to be done I think something like:

General Babble - Been stopped by the police? Looking for locations? Meets and events...
Gear Talk - Discussions about lenses, bodies, filters, tripods, bags etc
Photographic Gallery - Post your shots and receive feedback

Not sure what sub-forums should be used, but I would be strongly against anything related to brand. I think that would be counter productive.

Re: Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

For those people resistant to a split, it's something which has to be done at some point as a forum becomes very busy.
It's not fantastic to have the post you made earlier disappear off the first page within a few hours and therefore less likely to be read.
It's also not convenient for people wanting to read about specific topics to have to wade through lots of irrelevant threads.
For every person who likes one big melting pot, there will be at least one person who finds it an inconvenience.
And there is always the option of dipping into the various sub forums if you want (and are brave enough) to continue to browse everything.

Remember that there will always be the Digital Photography parent forum for general discussions. Perhaps this is the place to discuss the art and technique of taking photos. Under this forum would be a sub forum entitled (something like) Cameras, bodies, lenses and accessories obviously for discussion about the hardware.
And a sub forum called (something like) Photo sharing and critique where people share and discuss their photos.
Based on the feedback you have given so far, this is my favourite solution at the moment. One forum becomes three.
Hopefully this will be the best compromise which everyone including, importantly, the moderators will be happy with.

Sounds a great idea to me (and a long overdue one too!) Post's disappear so quickly.

The Sub forum should be simple as possible -
Equipment
Technique
Show n' tell

Dress them up with fancy titles.

I'll go along with those main three, then if at a later date you could split again into camps for the hardware at least.

Might be nice to have something for editing software, tips and setting up etc.

IMHO this would be a good setup to start with :

1. Cameras
2. Lenses and filters
3. Accessories (tripods, bags, ...)
4. Photo viewing and editing software
5. Members photos and discussion

C U soon,

Sounds about right to me - not too many sub-forums and easily workable.

Re: Reorganising the Digital Photography forums - your suggestions please

I can see advantages and disadvantages to this.

The advantages would, as previously said, posts wont fall off the front page as quickly and therefore people will/should get more views and maybe even stop the posts complaining about to coments to photos.

The disadvantages are that will everyone look in each sub-forum? For instance, if you want advice on a lens, you could poddibly lose input from someone not looking in that sub-forum because they have no need to! Or if asking for advice on bodys, will everyone look in their even if their happy with their current one?

Therefore maybe as a suggestion, the forum is left as is and so it would be everyones first point of call and would see the posts asking for advice, but then have a sub-forum to phost photos and ask for comments on them?

Yup me too, each sub forum could then be broken down further if needed but I think that about covers it.

I would also love to say differently but I don't see a huge amount of value in the photo album forum, sorry
