How do you store your images

As the title suggest, I ask this cause I transfered some of my photo's to DVD from my hard drive but when I went to look at them later they weren't there, I know they were sent to disc cause I watched them being sent and you could see that the disc had been burnt to.

So got me thinking if I had some files that were important and the same thing happens what would I do, so as the title ask. Thanks in advance

Re: How do you store your images

I store all mine on my NAS (Buffalo Terrastation Live) which has RAID to ensure that I shouldn't lose all those precious memories if one (possibly two) drive(s) fails...

... of course if the house burns down then I'm screwed still :-/ but hopefully that's a lot less likely than a drive failure!

Re: How do you store your images

Three separate HD's one only ever gets turned on once a month for backup then off again, i used to backup to disk and HD but found one day that all the disks were corrupt, never again.

Re: How do you store your images

I back them up to two hard drives in my main machine, one hard drive in the Media PC, and then export the best ones to Picasa, full size.

I also do an occasional back up to DVD, which I give to my Dad.

The number of people who never back up their digital images amazes me. It is one of the few things you can never replace.

Re: How do you store your images

Backup taken to Time Machine every hour.

Also dump key things like photos, music, email, documents to an external drive every couple of weeks.

Each month or after a big change do a backup of key items above to a USB passport drive which stays with me in my work desk in case the house burns down / gets burgeled.

Online backups - Mozy. $4.95 USD/month for unlimited backups.

Currently have 520GB of backups that are protected against fire, theft, lightening etc. Unless of course that something major happens that takes out Bristol and their datacenter in Utah!

On a side note... Many people seem to back up their data onto external USB drives. While this is great there are problems with this...

In my case both my machines at home are sitting there with nice silver external USB drives next to them with backups of their respective machines.

If I was to get burgled (God forbid) I suspect those machine might look tempting, and so might the USB enclosures. So all would be lost!

Likewise if my study burns down, all would be lost.

For this reason I have another 500mb usb enclosure I backup my other enclosures to a couple of times a year. This enclosure then lives tucked away in my clothers cupboard.

Re: How do you store your images

I guess you have to decide how far you want to go when it comes to protecting your data?

Personally my Lightroom library is stored on a RAID 1 enclosure meaning the data is stored on two physical drives so if one fail then I have a backup. Admittedly both drives are in a single enclosure so if it got stolen or destroyed I'd lose everything.

The next stage would be to make a complete backup of the library on a separate drive and store that elsewhere. Maybe a high capacity NAS tucked away somewhere in the property so at least then the chances of it getting destroyed/stolen at the same time as my primary drive are quite low.

Backing up to DVD is ok, but you run the risk of a disk getting lost/damaged and given that I've got 100+ GB of photos in Lightroom, that's quite a few DVDs

Finally full off-site storage like Springtide mentions is the optimum. Only issue would be getting it all back in the event of total data loss. If you've got a data cap on your broadband then it could take you several months to download it all again!

It's not unknown for raid to take both drives down.

I'd suggest just getting one of those cheap 500mb/1tb usb enclosures and periodically backing up to it. That drive can then be tucked away elsewhere, or even off site.

All my photos are backed up using DSychronize (Dimio's Tools) which is a great little free utility that can update one directory (structure) from another. But it will only apply changed files. ie: So if you have 1,000,000 picture and add just 1 more, it will only copy across the one new file...

Re: How do you store your images

I dump to a backup drive and then to a backup dvd copy. The dvd copies are done x2 and also checked. One is stored with me and the other is posted and stored in a fire proof safe that I have.

Still hoping for super cheap online storage to come along.

Maybe google will offer 50gb of storage one day (for free) which you can just create as a mapable drive...

Re: How do you store your images

Backed up to 2nd internal hdd

Backed up to External hdd

Stored on DVD at the end of the year

Plus, lots of images (edited 'ready to print') on FlickR

I try and keep it simple, don't want to get bogged down with safe keeping and backing up.

Oh, and i print images and stick them in albums too

Edit; when the price is right - im moving to BluRay data storage. 50gb in one disc - i'll have some of that thankyou very much!

Re: How do you store your images

Ideally what you need is online storage (come on google!!), and all you do is map directories to 'sync' up onto the online storage. So for example your photos are copied from your own hard drive to the online storage.

Viola, the only backup needed...

Re: How do you store your images

Mine are stored on an internal HDD (not my OS drive, just incase), then after a few weeks I back them up onto a 250GB WD Passport, along with all my music and documents.

I just transfer everything manually, although I might give some sync software a try. Rrecommendations anyone?

I'm also going to start backing them all up on DVD too, although like kBm that will probably be an annual thing. Then I'll keep the disks at work, so they're always safe.

Online storage would be pretty decent, although being a cheapskate I wouldn't really be willing to pay much for it

EDIT: I'm going to try the sync software Neil mentioned. Must have missed that on 1st read of the thread.

I tried loads, and it's the simplest/easiest I found

You can run it as a service to update automatically, but I prefer just running it as a standard app whenever I want to do an update (eg: once a month).

I backup to an external USB hard disk and might get a BluRay burner now they are only £150 for the drive and £4 for a 25Gb blank bluray disk.

Huh! But you can buy a far more friendly storage device, with 40x the storage for less than half that price? A 1tb USB external drive?

I've not tried Dsyncronise but Microsoft Synctoy works really well and is simple to use.
