best possible photo printer?

Does anyone know the best printer, laser or inkjet, I can get for photoshop images? Price not important, just sharp images with excellent colour representation. Any suggestions appreciated.

Re: best possible photo printer?

If your thinking large format, up to 60", then you may want to look at some of the professional printers like the Canon iPF9100, a snip at ~£10,000, plus inks are only about £200 each (it takes 12).

Joking aside, you may want to refine your question a little You might be best off telling us what sort of sizes you want to print?

Re: best possible photo printer?

Thanks for replying dfrear - I need A4 size for small amounts of work. I'm reproducing artwork so need top quality coulour. I guess laser is better than inkjet for this?

wouldn't touch laser with a barge pole inkjet all the way. Budget wise can you justify £500?

Re: best possible photo printer?

That's the kind of thing your after Barry what Vulkan is selling. If your looking to sell your artwork this is the kind of printer you need that has fade resistant ink IMO.

If you were doing photo's I'd probably suggest for small production just outsourcing the printing to a professional company but with artwork you'll no doubt have a bit of fun with colour matching the artwork to the print output so could pay dividends having your own printer for proofing.

Re: best possible photo printer?

Thanks a lot for your help guys, I'm a lot clearer now on what I need. By the way dazza, I've looked at outsourcing thanks but it is sooo much more expensive! And you are right, having my own printer I'm in total control of the process. Regards.

Re: best possible photo printer?

For A4 printing only and no intention of going to A3 sizes, keep to A4 printers and save the money for ink.
Personal preference but the best printer I've had by far is a Canon Ipixima5000. Absolutely stunning pictures and cheap to run. Epsoms have given me so much grief in the past I will never go near one again, no matter how good they are. Heads block, pictures smearing, misaligement all the time grrr. Yet others rate them the best.

The epson printers we are referring to are far beyond the budget range, the epson printer Vulkan is selling for example uses the same ink technology as it's 44" counterpart the epson 9880 which would set you back over £4K. It's like expecting a Nikon D40 to be made in the same way as a D3x.

Re: best possible photo printer?

Got a cost for you Vulkan for A3 it looks like your printer takes 11ml cartridges and these cost rougly £11 each. Working on that bases an A3 Full colour with little to no white (worst case scenario) I'd say based on what I've done in the past your looking at using 5ml of ink so would cost £5. All these are approximate though, if you doing black and white printing you could be using comfortably half or less ink a print.
