Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

My imported headphone is now worth more

It would be nice to accessorise the G9 with conversion lenses, but alas that its covered in dust tells its own story

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

With no news of a Pay rise that sucks...
I suppose no pay rise is better than no Job though.. I just heard the news about Adams
Saying that, market forces are dynamic and poor sales might make the price increases modest
I got my first shock of 2009 buying a train season ticket this morning. It has gone up from 3 days ago ( er .... last year)
Do we now run our railways in foreign currency???

Hmmmm - don't suppose anyone 'in the know' can give any clues about whether the 5D Mk II will be affected or not? I'd hoped to wait for the price to drop a wee bit but maybe a rethink is called for

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

Just a guess, but I would say 20% - 25% rise on all the low to mid stuff, and less on the high end.

I would imagine they shift more of the low/mid end stuff than the high end kit, so it would make sense to put the price up on that stuff rather than on the high end

Got to fear for the bricks and mortar stores with this news. The big online rack em and stack em retailers can probably absorb more of the increases and undercut the high street further.

Canon and Nikon confirm UK price rises

Monday 5th January 2009
Chris Cheesman
Japanese photography giants Canon and Nikon have confirmed that they have been forced to raise product prices as a result of the rising yen and plunging pound.

Canon Europe today told Amateur Photographer that it has increased the price of 'certain products' from this month.

However, it is not yet clear which products are affected. A spokesperson for Canon Europe would only say that retailers have already been notified of the increases.

Canon blamed the rises on 'currency fluctuations and the recent rapid increase in the value of the yen versus the euro'.

Meanwhile, Nikon UK revealed that it will increase the prices of 'imaging and optics products' from 12 January - owing to 'volatile exchange rate conditions'.

The firm said it will not announce the extent of the price increases before that date.

The UK spokesperson added: 'All product groups will be affected to some degree. A recommended retail price list will be available to view from 12 January at Nikon UK - Home.'

The value of the euro fell 25% against the yen last year, with the pound faring even worse against the Japanese currency.

Sony had yet to respond to a report in the Financial Times that it is also poised to raise prices as it 'struggles to make money on imports into Europe'.

Canon and Nikon hike prices as pound plummets news - Amateur Photographer - news, camera reviews, lens reviews, camera equipment guides, photography courses, competitions, photography forums

It looks like Canon have already raised the RRP of the 5D II to £2450 from £2300.

I buy all my kit from 'proper' shops. I need to know I can get there if it fails.

I spoke to a retailer today (not LCE ) and the chap suggested that Nikon prices are rising by 15% as of the 12th Jan.

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

So they're happy to hike prices when the yen becomes strong. I notice that we didn't exactly see good value for money (compared with the likes of the US) when the pound was strong.

Worst of both worlds by the look of it.

DSLR's bodies and lenses are, in the most part, (exluding pro's) a luxury item instead of a neccesity. I don't think many people are going to be able to justify splashing out on new kit when they're already tightening the purse strings. Especially when they're getting what is essentially a bad price instead of the easier to justify bargain.

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

I think the UK prices could well increase in line with what onestop digital are currently charging which seems on a lot of the Nikon lenses to be around 15-20% higher than UK dealers.

When it comes to a hobby I think these camera manufacturers know full well they can charge practically anything for the top end stuff and us enthusiasts will pay it, it's like a drug isn't it photography. Credit crunch or not have to say I've been pretty impressed by some of the spending going on here of late, I didn't expect to see so many upgrading to the canon 5d MK II hats of to you those who have

I can see where you're coming from, but lets face it, Canon & Nikon don't just make cameras and lenses for the fun of it... they're in it for the money. If the exchange rate means they have to charge more to make a profit then that's what they have to do. I agree that it'll probably mean that they sell less units, but no doubt they were expecting to sell less this year anyway.

They're in it for the money and they're going to charge as high as they think we're prepared to pay. I voted with my feet and bought from the US or second hand. Now I'll vote with my feet again and probably not upgade to the 5DII anytime soon unless I start making a bit more money from the old photography.

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

With these kind of price rises I cant see any high st retailers Jessops and the like, being here by the summer. You cant blame the manufacturers though with the pound being so low it must be hitting their margins. Its a pity we do not make much stuff in the UK we would clean up now. I have just upgraded all my Plasma and home cinema Blue-ray etc while there are such good deals to be had and prices in that sector are at a low anyway. Pity that bill for my HC I could have bought my dream lens Nikon 400mmf2

Re: Canon/Nikon price rises this month

The 1D3 is now at £4000 (up a staggering £950). The 50D is up £50, likewise the 40D.

The 14/2.8L II is now £2400, the 85/1.2L II now £2240 and the 200/2.0IS a simply mind-boggling £6230!!!!!!!
Even the 135/2.0L is £1150 and the 50/1.2L, £1320.
