Question DSLR for experienced amateur

Since 1976 I'm working with a NIKON F2 (SLR). Now I want to make the change to the DSLR market.

What's the best I can buy at the moment when I want to spend between £ 400 and £ 700 ?

Is stabilisation in the lens better than in the body ?

Re: DSLR for experienced amateur

I'd suggest Nikon D90+18-105VR. Best performing sensor at the moment in that price band, and will work with your old Nikon lenses.

If you've got a lot of old Nikon AIS lenses, you might consider stretching to a Nikon D300, as this will meter and AF with these properly.

The jury is still out on in-body vs in-lens stabilisation. There's not a whole lot of difference to be honest. In-lens has the advantage of stabilising the viewfinder as well though.

Same here!

I think in-lens IS is the more mature tech, whereas in-body IS has only really came in to the market within the last couple of years

You may also like the Canon 40D, very good bang for buck

Depending on your lenses, the D90 will be ideal.

If you want something close to what you are used to with film, have a number of classic lenses - then the D700 is, I expect, an ideal target over the next year or so if you can wait and save some more.
