These are great :)

I'm sure you'll recall my tantrum last night in the form of the thread "These are rubbish "

It's had loads of views but it's this one if you missed it:-

http://www.avforums.com/forums/digit...e-rubbish.html

Anyway, I figured I'd get back to doing what (I think) I do well - people. So off to cambridge to do some street photography. My attitude today was "double hard" - I figured if anyone objected I'd tell them that I have to do it for therapy after yesterday's misery.

So, on with the show......

1) Red. I like this best as the girl was happy to pose. She knew I was attracted to her hair and she posed nicely for me. She seemed to like the picture anyway.

2) Rock and Roll Star. I asked him to give me "some attitude" and this was the best I got. Oh well....

3. Kung Fu Panda. She didn't know I caught her in the act. Right place, right time I guess.

4) This chap seemed so deep in thought.

5) "VAT."

I love the hemp stall man - he never looks up and the lighting in his little stall is great.

6. Tourists

7) Pro

And then after all this I ended up becoming the unofficial official photographer for a Jive and Swing band who did a street gig in the city. But that's a story for another day......

Nightie night.

Ryan

Those are great, really nice set.

Why are they all in there twice though? Did you press a wrong button?

Yeah - brain malfunction. I think there's only one of each now.

Thanks chief. I'm always up for it, but I get a bit disillusioned when it goes a bit pear-shaped.

That is a great set, even the ones where the people have posed they still look unposed. I think the guitarist does have an attitude, but maybe not the one you were looking for

I see you have come out of your "Rubbish" period quite quickly and now have entered your " ooh i am pleased with these" period.

Re: These are great :)

Hi there. I just had a look at the previous thread you mentioned, and then this one.

I think a lot of the images in the previous thread are actually very nice. I must admit to not being a massive fan of landscape stuff - I always find that, unless there's somewhere truly beautiful (or interesting in an unusual way) being imaged, the images can tend to be mediocre (silk purse, sows ear and all that). I think the place that you were in looks as though it falls into this category tbh. That said, I think you've done a great job. However, for me, the best image of the set is No. 7 - "No". It's a well spotted, and well executed shot imo. I really like it.

In the present thread, I really like No. 4 - the combination of catching someone who doesn't know they are being photographed (so that they're not putting on any airs or graces, or unnatural poses), as well as the B&W treatment make it work for me.

I think the attitude was "God, why did I choose to busk on the coldest day ever!!? Just take my picture and go away!!" (or words to that effect).

Long may it last,

Thanks chap. I must admit I do have a lot of "periods".

Hopefully the current one will last as you say.

Cheers

Thanks pal.

When it comes to landscapes, I must admit in the surrounding area (30miles or so) it's not exactly a landscape lovers dream. Next time I'll take myself a bit further and be better prepared (hopefully).

Yeah I agree. It's my least favourite of the bunch. The guy taking the photo made me laugh with his mannerisms but you obviosuly can't tell that from the photo.

Nice set, Red is lovely

We often go to Cambridge and I always take my camera with the intention of taking candids but never get the guts to go through with it. How do people react when you A) ask if you can take their picture or B) point and shoot anyway ?

Have lots of respect (and hope to try) this type of work, always worried I will get the camera pushed down my thoat

Where you using flash or available light ?

Bill

Thanks Bill.

I just asked Sarah to help me anwser this. Her words:-

"You're a people person. You don't flirt (hesitates), but you're cheeky and that helps. And you have a lovely smile which calms people. You have a way with people"

That's her words mate (I didn't pay her - honest).

My opinion? I just get on with people and have always been able to talk to people from all walks of life; from the tramp on the corner to the upper crust pretentious types who think they are better than everyone else. All are equal in my book and I treat peole that way.

When it came to the girl with the red hair I pointed my camera at her, she noticed so I shouted out "do you mind?" (nicely, of course). She smiled and shook her head. I called back "it's the hair" and she nodded as if to say "yeah, everyone likes the hair". I then composed and fired off two shots. I'd already set the camera up before she noticed me. Afterwards I took the camera over and showed her the picture. "here you go," says I. "Oh yeah," she says "well done".

After these brief encounters I always feel guilty that I can't send them a picture or refer them to flickr or something.

My only other trick is to focus on someone, take the shot, but then keep aiming in the same direction for a few more seconds. As they pass me they then assume I was aiming at something behind them. That seems to work quite well

Hope these little tips help

Oh, and they were all natural light, but I intend to introduce some flash eventually.

BTW I don't know if you saw the post I put in the "best of 2008" thread? I don't think you saw it - I should have pm'd you instead. I suggested meeting you last Friday as I was in Sudbury all afternoon. Maybe another time? Or if you're in Cambridge just pm me before hand and I'll try to be there too.

That applies to anyone else on the forum - I'm quite happy to let anyone buy me a coffee

Ryan
