OK, I'm having a moment of insanity here and have found the 5DmkII + 24-105L for £2499. Is that good or not?

Or help me out with my insanity and persuade me not to do it and that upgrading from a 400D is to much of a jump!

£2500 = return flights to Orlando @ £308.00 return with BA/VS (flight codes) . . . . makes for one of those long armed jumpers that tie-up at the back and padded wallpaper! A lotta Airmiles there!

I guess if you're THAT serious about your 'theng', then you do what you gotsta do.

Now I know NOTHING about your level of hardware, but having seen high-ISO images of the D700 and 5DMkII, the D700 gets my vote in that department. If I was laying out that money, it better be goddamn perfect in all departments.

Available for £2399 at Amazon. Read Bristol Pete's thread on his new Mk2, there is a lot more to it than simply a FF sensor. For £2800 you could get yourself a 40D + 17-55 F2.8 IS+ 70-200L F4 IS and 100-400L F4.5-5.6 IS. Now, I reckon you'd have a lot more fun with that bundle than the Mk2 + 24-105 F4.

That's my worry, its a lot of money. And is my ability worth that much money.

I have Canon lenses (50mm and 70-300) so unless I sold those it would be staying with Canon.

I have thought of the 40D and that it may be all I need (50D seems bad at high ISO but then I haven't read that much) and then that would also decide the um'ing and er'ing over the 17-55 IS I have been doing!

I have read Bristol Petes thread, but I may give it another read.

I have the 400d and the 40D I know should be my next body. However I am now finding my feet as they say and I really would love to go full frame.

I also have made my lens choice around EF lenses not EF-S to allow this.

This was all great and I was thinking about looking for a good deal on the 5D MKI in the new year. And then they go and bring out the MkII.

Maybe the the second hand market for the MKI will make my mind up for me, but I have not seen the flood on ebay I thought I would see.

If that's at Play.com, then be sure to add the free Sandisk Extreme III. It's the new high speed one too

I can recommend the 5Dii. I just got one recently. I was shooting 40D until now.

btw, the 5Dii is equal to D700 at high ISO low noise. See sRAW1 pics for evidence See the "5Dii owners thread" for links.

Same here I only bought EF lenses for my 40D, with one exception.

I had to get the Canon EF-S 10-22mm in order to get proper superwide on the 40D. I'm selling it off cheap now if anyone wants the lens.

A workmate of mine was considering upgrading his 350D to a 5Dii, I suggested he also look into getting a second hand 5D first. I think he sold his 350D for £200 and bought a 5D for £750. So costing a total of £550. I think that's possibly the best value upgrade to be had at the moment. But then I've been put off buying a 5Dii because of the non-existent improvement to the AF, so I'm perhaps biased.

If you have the money and a more expensive camera gives you pleasure, than why not .

I suppose the real question is will the increase in quality actually show up in the way you view your pictures, or will the improved features allow you to take pictures you wanted to take before, but couldn't.

Ideally, your equipments capabilities should be a bit above what you require, otherwise it is frustrating being restricted by the limitation of the equipment. Just a case of how much headroom is needed.

Oh, and do you want the extra weight hanging around your neck .

One question that needs to be answered is what do you like shooting?


Also going to go against the grain here and say you may be better of getting a 40d - 50d and some better glass.

From what I can tell is you have the 350d kit lens, 50mm1.8 and a Canon 70-300mm.

I think you will notice a bigger improvement in glass.

I know you will be getting the 24-105 with the 5d Mk2. But I still feel this still leaves you lacking in lens.

But until we know what sort of stuff you like doing, everyone is really guessing what best for you.

I mainly shot still life, animals (pets) and some portraits. I would also like to branch into landscapes this year. I probably won't be doing sports but if I do it wouldn't be often and I know I would really need a 1D and fast glass for that!

I raised this same question on Flickr and one of the replays was, 'One thing I'd ask before pulling the trigger is the performance of the nifty 50 and the 70-300 on the mark2. The camera demands a lot out of its lens, and I can't comment on those lenses per se.'

I've mentioned about trying to decide on the 17-55IS, yes it would limit me to the crop sensors if I upgraded but maybe its a better option for me?

I'm the sort of person who see's something new and thinks "I need to get that" and the main pulling points is the 24-105 and video, but the reason for wanting video is probably a while off.

So, its spending a lot or going back to what lens to get 17-55IS or 24-105 L and 10-20!
