Content copyright issue

I have been doing the random internet thing today and found the following on Avforums.

Quote:
Content Copyright
By registering with the AVForums you consent that all the content you create on the AVForums is free of copyright at the point of submission to the AVForums and becomes property of M2N Limited (the owners of the AVForums) upon submission to the AVForums.

Link
Can someone clear this up for me. if I post one of my images on the forums then in right. It becomes property of M2M Limited ? Now I take it, this only applies to the image that I post and not any other version of it.

How does someone own something that I fully own All due to just providing content. Also content is not defined so that could cover everything or nothing ?

I was just wanting to see if others read the above in the same way. Over the many months I have seen various copyright posts on these forums about other places. Maybe others have never read the above ?

Am I just going mad ? If so I will get my coat

Re: Content copyright issue

This looks like it relates more to text, because an image isn't free of copyright before you post it (because the copyright vests with the 'author', which is you if it's something you've taken). It's not clear whether, by virtue of registering and posting a photo, the copyright transfers - I don't think so.

Re: Content copyright issue

A bit worrying that and I hope a mod can clear this up. All content presumably includes images.

I would interpret "free of copyright" as not using material of a third party who "owns" the copyright.

As I understand it if we post a picture on AVForums than that instance of the image becomes the property of M2M, and as such they can delete it. This does not necessarily mean that copyright has been transferred to M2M and as such does not give them the right to use the image or alter it without the copyright holders permission.

But, it is a while since I was involved in copyright issues as part of my job (meaning I might be talking out of my ), and this does need to be cleared up.

Thanks for raising it and nice to see someone is on the ball at this time of the year .

I understand that this might be an 'out of the box' policy that most forums have and apply. This would also cover every image and also any other format.

So any image that I post as a member becomes apart of this policy. I should only post content that I have the rights to do so. This would mean that all 3rd part stuff would have to be pulled from all my posts. Thats only if I posted any in the first place.

I understand that if I can still quote and repost any content that has already been provided. But its the free of copyright statement thats getting me ?

Can someone help ?

Re: Content copyright issue

I'm assuming it relates to images that are not owned by the author and may subsequently be subject to copyright, the forums owners would therefore be liable.

Images taken and posted by you are still owned by you regardless and would not be used in any way without your prior consent.

That's my take on it.
