I have bought whole houses in one day so I can't believe it has taken me nearly a month to decide between 3 cameras that all do the same thing and have about a £50-£80 price difference. However I finally decided to go with the Sony A200 and bought it tonight from Amazon. Cheapest I could find even with paying postage (so I can get it by Xmas). What swung it for me was the fact I could use the older Minolta lenses which I will probably have more chance at affording as I build up a collection. Bought Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 while I was at it as I thought I may as well learn how to do post processing as well.

Anyway thanks for all the advice and I look forward to much more in the future.

thinking of getting this camera for my wife to replace her now broken point and shoot.she is a novice but seems to have a good eye .i just dont want her to panic when she first trys to use it. is it fairly easy to use?

The Sony A200 is pefectly easy to use if you are willing to learn, its ok on auto but its brilliant once ya get into it.

Aarrgghh Amazon just dropped the price to £247, less than 24 hours after I bought the camera. I've emailed them to try and refund me the difference, threatening to return the camera if they don't (which I won't of course coz for £12 it's not worth it but they don't know that!!!)

Anyway £218 after cashback is now a great price. God knows how Jessops, etc can compete with that as they sell theirs for £30 more now. They wouldn't price match when I asked and I just laughed at the sales guy when he said that they have a good deal on a memory card for £40 which I got from amazon for £14.

Haha chill out! Amazon have a 30 day price drop guarantee , in that if it drops in price within the month you purchased, they will refund the difference.
'If you want to check if any of your purchases are eligible for a refund, just follow these simple steps:

1. Visit Your Account and look at all invoices from the past thirty days.

2. Click on the item names to pull up the current item description/price and compare to the price that you paid.

3. If you paid more than the current price, copy down the order number and go to the Return and Refunds Contact Form page.

4. Select Refund Inquiry as your subject, and check off the order(s) of interest. If you dont see the order in question listed, enter the order number in the Other field.

5. State in the comments that the price dropped, and that you want to be credited for the difference. It might help to mention the item name as well as old and new price, but Im not sure that this is necessary.'

That sounds complicated but once you get the hang of it it's VERY easy. I've claimed back pounds and pennies before!

Thanks for that info. I actually did contact them with that info via the Returns form, just not as a refund enquiry. Anyway I'm sure they will work it out.

Well done you will be very pleased with your new camera. I have owned one for 4 months or so and I cant believe how good some of the photos I manage to take are, mostly luck and the excellent A200 camera rather than myself stood behind it. Good luck with your new camera.

Apparently they stopped doing this. Found this on their website "Only orders placed before September 1, 2008 are eligible for a price difference refund under the Post-Order Price Guarantee policy. As of September 1, 2008 we are no longer offering discounts if prices change on our website after you make a purchase."

Anyway it's only £12 so I'm not fussed either way

Sony A200 Digital Field Guide
Pick this up as well mate, I have both this and the magic lantern guide and much prefer this at half the price. It explains everything to you in dumb language you can understand rather than making it more complicated than it is and it is full colour throughout which helps a lot because it shows easier what you are aiming for.
