Re: Fountains Abbey with my D90

Nice set........#4 and #5 are the best I think..........looks like you have HDR'd them a touch or is it just post processing?

Really Nice set though.........

Thumbs up Re: Fountains Abbey with my D90

Very nice Ma'am

I'm thinking about visit there this week
Is the last shot St Mary's Studley Royal and is it open to the public all the time or restricted to certain times ?
It looks amazing from photos posted on the interweb.

You've done a good job of it IMO. Not too obvious or over cooked.
The first could possibly do with a touch more contrast, but saying that I quite like it as it is!

Nice set altogether, I think I'd choose no. 3 as my fave.

Re: Fountains Abbey with my D90

It's funny how people pick up different things - but for me No1 is the pick. Love the non-obvious low-contrast look. It reminds me of a pencil sketch I did back when I was an art student at Harrogate College. We visited Fountains Abbey a few times.

I'm intrigued by the first three, they look like drawings to me, was that intended and how did you get that look.

Mark.
I merged 3 exposures in Photoshop and then picked the white point as to what I thought looked best. Then converted to Mono.

I thought it showed off the stone work quite well. I was using a laptop for the photoshop so they might be a bit lighter than I thought they were.

Re: Fountains Abbey with my D90

As soon as I saw the first 3 I was wondering how great they would look HDR'd. I think it's because they are B/W that they are lacking something. Don't get me wrong, the first 3 are really great, but I wish they were in colour. The brickwork and concrete beams are crying out for some tone mapping. The first one could do with straightening out a bit as the slight angle is a bit off putting. Nice pictures, well done.

Re: Fountains Abbey with my D90

Wow. Great photos, I'm thinking about buying a D90 - do you think this is OTT as a first SLR or is a D40 a more sensible choice? thanks!

The D40 is a great camera for the money and comes with a good kit lens. All of these photos apart from the Deer are using the D40's standard 18-55 lens but on my D90.

I got my first DSLR, D40, in February and its been great to learn with. On the D40 nearly all the settings have to be altered by drilling down into menu's so its very user friendly and it has a help function that tells you a bit about what each setting means etc.

Take a look at the pictures its capable of on Flickr or there some on my flickr. if you look from Feb - Octobers photos.

I just bought the D90 to help me grow as a photographer and take advantage of the newer sensor technology, iso capability mainly and the increased megapixels.

The 6mp is great on the D40 and I have a lovely 70 x50 cm enlargment that shows its more than enough for printing but I found it limiting when I came to cropping pics.

I think you need to decide if its a hobby you really want to splash a lot of cash into. If its something you're really serious about the D90 is a great camera and has Auto etc to start off with but its not cheap at £689 for the D90 Kit with 18-105 VR lens.
