Help with which one for my dad...

I'm buying a digital camera for my dad. He used to be in to photography but hasn't got his canon SLR out for years so I want to get him a compact that is advanced enough for him to be able to play with some of the more complicated functions, whilst still portable and quality enough to provide good results.

I personally use a Nikon F601 SLR, a Fujifilm Finepix S7000 and a Fujifilm F410 for more informal stuff - I'm saying this because I feel swayed towards Fujifilm as I have had nothing but excellent quality from both of mine.

Budget is tight (as usual!!) and I know that if he gets back into it, he'll go and spend a fortune on the best DSLR or compact so its more of an introductory camera....I remember from a conversation ages ago though that he was particularly wanting a camera with around 5 x optical zoom and I think a larger screen at the back would be useful for him.

I've narrowed it down to:

Canon IXUS 960 IS - £120
Canon IXUS 960 IS Digital Camera - Titanium 2.5" LCD: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Fujifilm J120s - £99
Buy FUJIFILM FINEPIX J120S | 10 megapixel digital camera - Cameras & Camcorders | Comet

but I can't find an in depth review for the J120s anywhere...Is the Canon SO much better? Its more than I was wanting to pay to be honest.

Thanks!!

Re: Help with which one for my dad...

I think the Fuji looks a better bet for you as it has the optical zoom and LCD size you are after. With the canon you seems to gain image stabilisation and 12 mega pixels as opposed to 10 (I wouldn't get hung up about that certainly in a compact). I'd get the fuji personally although in your position I'd probably hunt around and find whether I could get a compact with say 8 megapixels with the same spec for less money.
