Ok so my D40 is in the post to me what lens should I get??

Hey how are you
My D40 and 18-55 kit is with royal mail due to be delivered tomorrow, I have a sandisk extreme sdhc 4 Gb on my desk still packaged...
Next month or January I intend to buy a longer lens for shooting ships entering the mersey and also planes taking off at the airport and fighters zooming through the Lake district..
Which should I opt for??
I have a tripod and monopod but will upgrade these basic models in due course
Also is the pantone huey pro worth getting for my crt or should I spend more?? its @£90

Hi,

I have the 55-200 VR lens for my D40, which is great for what it costs, but not sure it's going to be long enough for what you want ?

Might want to look at the 70-300 VR, but that costs a fair bit more. Haven't used it myself, but hear good things about it.

The Sigma 70-300 will be a bit cheaper, but not sure it will be as good - if you go for the Sigma, make sure you get the version that will autofocus on the D40 - I think it's this one - 70-300mm f/4,0-5,6 DG APO Macro - but check before buying.

Cheers the guy at calumet recommended the Nikon VR 70-300 at £319 but I read that there is a sigma at @ £100 so will look in to it thanx for your input

I'm looking at the Nikon 70-300vr at the moment, but most comments i'm reading say there isnt much to be gained over the 200vr for the extra cost, which is alot

I had the 55-200mm VR and now have the 70-300mm VR....both good lenses with the bigger lens being a step up in quality.

If you get the Sigma lens, try to make sure it has Sigma's HSM (internal motor) to allow auto-focus on the D40.

Sorry for the thread hijack, , but better quality....quality of lens, faster focus or quality of images produced, sharper.

The Sigma 70-300mm APO DG macro is very well regarding (but sorry, it's the £150 one!). Just make sure it's the D40 AF compatible version.

The Nikon 70-300VR is the better lens and the VR will probably negate the need to upgrade your tripod as you'll be able to handhold at 300mm, so the £275 isn't quite as bad is it first appears.

I bought the Sigma 70-300 with internal motor from Onestop Digital and it was £115, I'd wait for the exchange rates to improve as its currently £145 on their site.

Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro Lens

That is the autofocusing one on the D40 - i had one and it's very very good. A little noisey when focusing but otherwise excellent for a budget telephoto & macro lens.

It was £115 when i bought it about 9 months ago but due to the fall in the pound/dollar it's obviously increased in price.
