I'm heading to the Big Apple tomorrow and wondered if anyone had any last minute tips for places for photos, other than the usual touristy places which we will no doubt do?

And also, in terms of carrying an SLR, is it safe to do so at night? And should I take my tripod with me?

I had a great trip to NY in April!

I didn't actually take a tripod as I didn't have one at that stage but instead followed my plan and bought one from the most amazing photography store! B&H photographic! Well worth a visit!

There are some good pics to be had on Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square is clichéd but a must photograph!

This restaurant is well worth a visit too! (Turn up early or book! We stumbled across it by chance and waited for an hour for a table for 2)

Times Square, Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island, USS Intrepid/Concorde, Ground Zero (spooky), Battery Park.

I felt very safe when I visited and had DSLR. Hope you have a very wide lens . . . you'll need it for the urban scraper shots. Don't take the pod (IMO). It's a happnin' place.

Depending on weather it maybe worth a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Central park and going to the Roof Garden Cafe for some nice "tree top" views of the park.

If you like steak try and go to Peter Lugers Steakhouse in Brooklyn, you have to book in advance they do not take credit cards but it is the best steak anywhere!

Pretty "touristy" but you have to go to New Jersey to get the best shots of Manhattan - but it's just so simple to do : go to the World Trade Centre subway station, get on the PATH train and ride one stop, under the Hudson, to Exchange Place, come up above ground and there you are - the best views of lower Manhattan you'll get Plus it'll only cost you a buck fifty on the PATH train

Also, whilst in NJ, go to Elizabeth State Park, as you can get some nice shots from there of both Manhattan and Liberty Island

I'm jealous too. NYC is such a fab place. I went in March 2006 and I can't wait to go again.

I have to disagree with Pirate - you should take your tripod. Especially if you want to take some night shots. But as Big Si owen says, B&H is an amazing shop so you could always get one in there if you don't bring one with you. And B&H is well worth a visit anyway.

I'd also recommend going to NJ to get the best view of Manhattan. I went to Liberty Park and took this panorama:

I would also recommend walking over Brooklyn Bridge as a. it's a stunning structure and b. the view from the Brooklyn side of the river is great as well. I took this one from there:

And yes, it is touristy, but you have to go up to the top of the Empire State Building. It is well worth it and I took this one from the top:

I didn't go up but others have recommend going up to the top of the Rock. This is supposed to be good because you can see the ESB from there.

I'd also recommend you take a helicopter ride over Manhattan. Not cheap but well worth it. We used a company that flies from near Wall Street. Again I took a snap and here it is:

I felt very safe wherever I was with my DSLR so I wouldn't worry too much. Have a fantastic time and I'm looking forward to seeing your shots when you get back.

Have been recommended that steakhouse a couple of times, but can't get a booking that fits with our schedule.

Love those pictures electrolyte... need to barter with the wife to get the tripod into the suitcase (although I could say she can only take 2 pairs of shoes!)

Any other tips welcome, I've got wifi in the apartment we're staying in, so keep 'em coming!

Try Rosie O'Gradys. Also highly recommended for quality of steak.

The Top of the Rock at the Rockefeller Center is also worth a visit. It's not as busy as the Empire State Building but has a great view it.

The photo on the cover of the Oasis album, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants was taken from there.
