Nikon 105mm VR Macro- my first pics

I picked up this lens last Thursday and had a chance to play with it yesterday. So far the stand-out feature has been the amazing DOF across such a short distance.
It also looks like it's going to be a fantastic portrait lens.

The 1st couple of shots are macro ones of a flower I spotted when out with the dog. The 3rd shot is the aforementioned dog doing her modelling bit !

1 - Flower 1

2 - Flower 2

3 - Tia

Good looking boxer

On the flower shots you should try using a smaller aperture to get a great depth of field, to balance that for a reasonable shutter speed you may need to up the ISO.

Both flower shots were taken at f4 with a shutter speed 1/125s.

I figure macro photography will take a wee while to get the hang of.....

Getting the correct depth of field with Macro work is a bit tricky because of the small distances involved. If you search the web you can easily find a depth of field calculator to show you exactly what I mean. Some of the best macro shots are actually a compilation of shots taken at different focus points and "stacked" to achieve the required effect.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice....

I did take a few at smaller apertures. This one was taken at f22 for 1/6s.

I've taken quite a few flower shots with the 105VR. Quite often I use something around F8.

As a portrait lens you get nice out of focus backgrounds if you use f3.5.

Nice shot, now you just need to find some flowers before the pests get to them .
