Dawn in Dungeness and other things

A good selection of the Guildford contingent headed off to Dungeness on Saturday morning, leaving at 05:15 to get there for sunrise. After a fairly speedy drive we got there just as the sun was coming up. Frantic scrabbling ensued as the two cars we were in split to head for different spots.

Bit of a selection of different styles as usual. All with a Canon 1D. Some with a tripod before I left it behind on the beach. Luckily a fisherman picked it up and put it in his car for flogging on ebay safe keeping, and I got it back.

#1 I snapped this shot just before the sun got over the horizon. It illustrates what the place is like - odd buildings, strange bungalows and lots of telephone wires.

#2 Then I ended up down by the beach as the sun came up. It was a stunning sunrise, with mist floating just above the sea and the most amazingly orange glow. It looked like this:
[imglink]http://tobers.smugmug.com/photos/402850883_v4bua-L.jpg[/imglink]

#3 There's loads and loads to photograph in the area and it's well worth a visit. It's just ever so slightly strange though. I found a wrecked shack which was quite photogenic.
[imglink]http://tobers.smugmug.com/photos/402830032_aDNop-L.jpg[/imglink]

#4 And from the other side with the frost still on the boardwalk
[imglink]http://tobers.smugmug.com/photos/402878797_kDNV3-L.jpg[/imglink]

#5 After a while we trollied over to Camber Sands for a bacon buttie and some more pics. The light was getting quite harsh so silhouettes were high on the agenda.
[imglink]http://tobers.smugmug.com/photos/402859729_B9Haz-L.jpg[/imglink]

#6 And a mile-long walk down the beach got me to this breakwater at the entrance to Rye harbour for one of those ND110 shots:
[imglink]http://tobers.smugmug.com/photos/402884219_EDaNm-M.jpg[/imglink]

#7 After Camber Sands we went on to Camber Castle which is an old Norman building. I really struggled here as we'd clearly had the best of the day at dawn in Dungeness and the light was quite poor. This is the best I got, not as good as another of our party who did a cracking long exposure from the side of the castle getting much better form to it from the less direct light.

I really recommend Dungeness. Superb location. Watch out taking pics of the nukes though - the ranger warned us that the police would quite happily sieze pictures (though in a very polite way I'm sure), so I haven't posted any of shots of it not that I took any of course!

The day was rounded off with beers and Chinese at my place with a selection of everyone's images displayed on a big screen. I've got to say that there were some really stonking pics so I'm hoping some of the other crowd chip in here with theirs.

Re: Dawn in Dungeness and other things

Good write up and nice set - #4 and 6 are my picks though.

Like the leading lines in both of them, as well as the mist in #4.

Do like the processing in 3 as well.

I did a dawn/sunrise shot for the comp this month, and it's very satisfying getting up early and seeing the sun come up.

Was it good taking photos for 'fun' again ?

All class, but #3 and #5 appeal to me the most. The blueish tone and vignette work brilliantly on #3.
Top drawer.

Re: Dawn in Dungeness and other things

Heres a couple from me from that day. Spent most of the sunrise with the fishermen, all complaining it was cold, but all still there for the whole day !!!!
Great day had and a real challenge to get some photos out of what was quite a bland landscape.

#1 - Fisherman throwing his line out

#2 - Another fisherman.

#3 - First shot of the day as soon as i got out of the car

#4 - The sea at 3.2s exposure.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3211/...2baa981c_o.jpg

#5 - Then onto Camber Sands where this was taken looking out toward Tobers shot of #6 but i didnt walk all the way down to it, so stayed on the beach. A mile ??!!!!

Topbers, love the feel of #3, really encapsulates the mood of the place that morning.

Bloody brilliant to be honest. Really enjoyed myself.

As usual when out with a bunch of pals, everyone ends up feeding off each others creativity and you get an extraordinary buzz out of the whole thing. I love seeing what others are taking and trying to work out how they are visualising their shots.

Nice pics there Spaced K. The mist on the sea in #1 is well caught - I thought it was the most unusual sight and you got it well with the human interest in there too.

Cant wait for the shots from the other guys to come up - there's some realy stunners in there.

Good photos, brought back memories, my mate and I used to drive down many years ago a pot hole filled road between the power station and artillery range to go fishing off the beach

Great shots, I used to live in Dymchurch and often spent lazy sundays out at Dungeness, brought back some memories.

Re: Dawn in Dungeness and other things

Well thought I would add a few of my own from our little day out

The Power Station.

My shot of that highly secure research facility beside the power station.

Evidence of the effects of a nuclear summer on a sun parasol beside the power station....

Dawn breaking behind a lighthouse out at Dungeness point. I particularily like the fact there are birds on the top of every single pole in the image. I also have the same shot with the sun right behind the lighthouse but I much prefer this one with the light peaking out the side.

I have a few others from this area I might stick up but for now here is one from when we headed over to Camber. I left the beach area and headed off in to the dunes in search of evidence of human useage. I had a feeling that if I just kept wandering around I'd find something interesting and cool to shoot. Then I stumbled on this in a small open patch of gorse right at the top of one of the dunes. I like the fact that you look at the style of it and assume it's a girl writing about a boy but from the looks of the name it's probably a boy writing about a girl....or a girl writing about a girl....

More later

My take on the lame castle at Camber.....
This is an IR image with around an 80 second exposure I think.

Really like Gordon's misty power station shot very much. It looks like something from a Sci-Fi movie to me.

More great shots Spaced and Gordon.

Love the boats, love the power station, and the IR.

Is that a bit of off-camera flash in the research facility shot?

Yes it is. The light on left windows is the sun, the fence and area at front is a flash gun attached to my tripod with an elastic band.

Nicely done mate

That's quite inspiring. I keep meaning to try a bit of strobist stuff. Must try to remember to in future.

Cheers!

Great job on these guys. This is my local hunting ground so it's interesting to see some other people's angles on a familiar location.
