The French Selection...(Bristol Rugby)

Well, what a night. Bristol Rugby put in one hell of a shift and I covered the best game of Rugby I have covered yet - and I have seen a few now. Free flowing, utterly physical rugby, two yellow cards, lots of points, no rain and that massive first win for Bristol over Toulon, the new upstarts in French Rugby (Stade wannabes).....

The photos are not too bad either. Too many puns to think of - 'the french perfection,' 'the french selection' and so on.....a few more pix on flickr etc....

Nice Pete, all at 6400 again ?

Are you using the 300mm 2.8VR for this work, do you actually use VR for the action stuff ?

Like the way the colours are so bright, assume it is the floodlights picking them out.

Can't wait for my next opportunity.

Bill

Bill, yes, 300 f/2.8 with VR on to aid the shutter.

The Toulon kit made a welcome change as it all usually very dark. All 6400 ISO in RAW. No PP aside from straighten and crop.

6400 again - awesome work.

Jerry Collins isn't looking happy is he. Umaga has his work cut out this season.

Nice shots Pete. I do like the handoff shot (might be worth a close crop on that one). The camera looks like it's really delivering the goods.

I heard they won at last which is great news. Do you find you get engrossed in the game and forget to take photos?

No - I do enjoy it but never really get overly involved.

I will probably buy a season ticket when I stop taking pictures however.

Re: The French Selection...(Bristol Rugby)

Just wondering, roughly how many shots would you take in a game like this and whats the keep rate?
Are you taking single shots or just blatting away (so to speak).?

Thanks.

I shot about 200 frames in RAW, I shoot in small bursts of two and three then lock the image I want and delete the ones I dont want. I would say there are 40 images I 'could' use with a selection being ideal....its a game of percentages really in light like this in that some keepers have to go as the shutter speeds mean that they might not be as sharp as they could have been.

Re: The French Selection...(Bristol Rugby)

Great images. I really like 2,3 and 6.

I have to agree about shooting in short bursts. Tends to get more keepers, especially when there is fast tight action.

Brilliant rugby photos.
