This is probably a very newbie (DSLR) question but what multiplcation factor is the 18-55mm Lens Kit which comes as standard with the D40 please? (eg compared to say 10x on the Panasonic Z5?) or can you not compare so easily?

Just trying to make my mind up between a D40 and TZ5

I think it works like this ( I wait to be corrected )

An 18-55 is approx. a 3x, ie. 3x18= 54
a 100-300 would also be 3x, 3x100=300
a 55-250 would be approx 4.5x, 4.5x55=247

also bear in mind the equivalent reach on the TZ5

on its product page it says its equivalent to 28-280 on a 35mm camera

Now factor in the 1.5x crop on the Nikon D40, so the 18-55 kit lense is the equivalent of a 27-82mm

to get roughly the same, you'd need something like an 18-180. There are a few decent 18-200s around. Sigma do one, as do Nikon. Or the new Tamron 18-270 would give you even more reach than the TZ5.

Best value option is the D40+kit lens + Nikon 55-200VR. About £340 in total at the moment.

I wouldn't recommend a camera purchase based on zoom range alone - especially when you can change lenses with one of them... It all comes down to what you want to do with it really.

Ideally I would ask the magic camera pixie to conjure me a piece of kit which can take piccys the same quality as the D40 but in the size of the TZ5 (with 10x zoom)!

The advert reads D40 £179 £100 off usal price £279. I am 99% certain that the D40 only comes as a kit with the 18-55mm so yes with the lens The advert does say Mega stores only

Apparently it is a first come, first served offer for that store reopening. I don't live near you I'm afraid...
