A hobby that costs a fortune

Any way took the plunge last night and ordered the Nikon 18-200mm VR for an everyday lens and also as not to have to take all my kit on hols. Last week its was the SB600 flash but I did manage to do a deal and sell my D40 with kit lens, since having the D300 its got me in its grip and I just did not even pick the D40 up. Anyway the internal book keeper come accountant as now put a embargo on all spending some think to do with credit and crunch ( thought it was a breakfast cereal myself) So my lens line up is now Sigma 17-35 f2.8 HSM Tamron 90-mm f2.8 Macro Nikon 70-300mm VR and the Nikon 18-200mm VR all in all should be all I need to do what I want to do. ( would not bet on it though) . So all you newbies get ready as the hobby becomes an obession you will need some serious dough

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Oh good grief, tell me about it. I got the bug early this year when I bought a 40D with kit lens. Since then, I've upgraded the kit lens to a 24-105 L, bought a 2nd hand Sigma 70-200 DG EX, a carbon Manfrotto tripod, 4 different camera cases, and I'm now awaiting delivery of a Tokina 11-16 UWA lens . I'm definitely learning that good quality optics = £££, what with the anamorphic lens in my cinema room and now these stills lenses. Lovely stuff though .

I just try* and keep to one rule - pay off one bit of kit before you buy another Works like a charm! *unless there is an absolute bargain, or needs must. Then i adopt the 'ive had it for ages' approach with the finance department manager....

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Yep it's definitely down hilll from the moment you get into a D-SLR, I naively thought my old D80 and 18-70mm would fulfill my long term needs

Got no money to buy anything else now so it's cost as opposed to costs me a fortune

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Light the Blue Touchpaper and watch your money disappear I too started off with a D40 and kit lens just after Christmas this year. Fortunately there is always someone on the rung of the ladder that you have just moved up from that will buy your used kit. Bags are the bane of my life though. Just when you think you're sorted, along comes yet another item and now you have to buy yet another bloody bag to house it all in

Ha! What fools we are. I thought I had all I needed too, then earlier this year I bought a D300 ( funded from selling a telescope, so no new debt there) then I started to wonder what a nice fast f2.8 zoom would be like, before I knew it I was in the camera shop entering my pin number whilst looking at the huge box my new Nikon 70-200VR was in.
This is one of those hobbies where you need to lock away your credit cards for a good long while....

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

I don't want to consider just how much I've spent on camera gear over the last couple of years! Added a big 'ker-ching!' to the total yesterday when I bought a D300. Oh dear! Still, I'm taking that out of my redundancy money so the old workplace are paying for it.

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Although I get very guilty about buying shiny toys I justify my spending by my fairly low cost life - I don't drink, smoke, drive, buy takeaways or visit restaurants, I don't really go on expensive holidays (a week at Pembrokeshire and another at Norfolk was really pushing out the boat this year) so my biggest outgoing is the money I spend on camera gear and gadgets. I need something to occupy my free time and better I spent the money on camera gear and the like and went out in the fresh air than spent it on booze, fags and clapped out cars to 'do up'.

Oh yes I feel your pain, I sold my Canon gear to fund the D300 purchase and before long I was entering my PIN for a Shiny new Nikon 70-200 VR plus a host of other lenses and gear.

Just need to get out there and use it more, problem is the more gear you own the less you want to take with you - but then when you go light you always leave a Lens or two at home that would be perfect for the situation. Bah

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Still paying for the D300, have only just bought a 300m F4 Nikkor from ebay (£300 +) and now thinking that what I really need is a Sigma 10 - 20 and Nikon 80 - 400 VR, could sell the 300 F4 to justify one but not both.

Anyone tried the Sigma 120 - 400 as an alternative ?

Also would the 80 - 400 be as good as my 80 - 200 F2.8 if so this would release another few 100 quid on the S/H market and have one lens covering two ranges.

Bill

And don't forget the endless software upgrades required in order to continue to get RAW support for your shiny new camera.

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

It's call GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome)

I managed to put a bit of a hold on mine with camera stuff, happy with what I have (for now)

Unfortunately I have it with musical instruments

Now put the two together

Re: A hobby that costs a fortune

Well I drop my name into this as well.

I did laugh at the pathetic attempts to justify our NAS/Gas, fozzy lame attempt a classic example !!!!!!!!!! I here given up trying to as it generally results in a bout of laughter from the those poor listeners I'm attempting to convince.

Perhaps we need a support group, so I'll start.

Hello my name is Grant and I suffer from NAS/GAS and have done so for a few years. God I'm feeling better..............................

Emmmmm............ I wonder if Jessops got that SB900 in for me to look at

Yeah what a royal pain that is too. Mind you i have found work arounds so i dont have to fork out loads of what otherwise would be lens cash.
