Colin McRae Forest Stages from yesterday

Hi,

my future son in law Gary went up with his dad to the rally stages near Pitlochry and borrowed some of my gear for the day, whilst me and the missus did the babysitting, mind you it all came back in one piece (the gear I mean) so I suppose he's still the future son in law rather than Ex. This is his first attempt at shooting motorsport with a camera he's never used before, he got a quick 2 minute run through the controls the night before as he usually takes my Sony point and shoot if he wants pictures, I think he's done pretty well. All shot with Canon 1D Mark II and Canon 70-200 F2.8L

All of them are very good, sharp focus and colour. If I was being ultra picky, I would have like to has seen a couple with a background motion blur.

Re: Colin McRae Forest Stages from yesterday

I think he did a fantastic job. Not as much panning as there could have been, but because the shutter was slow enough to get some good wheel spin in some of them, they still are very dynamic.

Trusting him with your daughter is one thing... but your camera gear!

Nice set of shots though - I think No2 is my pick. Good movement in the back wheels and a nice dynamic feel.

New camera then, Mike?

Those are really excellent. Sharp and clear - lots of action. Nice work! Proper rally cars too.

tell me about it, at least he put it to good use, the camera that is I think he enjoyed the day and getting the use of camera only enhanced it for him, I think he was pretty pleased with himself when everyone around him was shooting with their mobile phones and compacts.

It was tricky for him to know exactly which shutter speed and iso to use as he only had a 2 minute run through the controls etc the night before, I think in the main he opted for sharper well focussed shots as opposed to trying to show any blur in the wheels, plus I think it was a fairly slow corner which didn't help.

Thanks, the 1D Mark II and 70-200 F2.8 looks a good combo the 'proper' cars were the reason he went, he said the sound was tremendous almost making the hairs on the back of his neck stand up as they approached his corner, I wasn't jealous in the slightest

I will pass on all of your comments to him as I am sure he will be pleased to read them.

Mike.

Re: Colin McRae Forest Stages from yesterday

Great job on these. I'd personally be happier with #2 out of those. The slower shutter speed has given you some wheel blur and also softened the background.

The others look a little bit static due to fast shutter, but as a first effort at this they're very good indeed.
