Bitten by the bug

The macro bug that is. Have been renovating my house at the moment so photo ops have been rare, but have really got interested in macro photography as there is always something in the garden to practise on. Took these shots today and am quite pleased with them. My hands must be getting steadier as I am getting some sharper pictures now.

Re: Bitten by the bug

Those are really good! I've tried macro insect photography and for the most part am pretty useless at it - you've obviously picked up the knack because those are great and very detailed.

Re: Bitten by the bug

Nice shots Diablo

I like 2,3 and 4, nice composition.

The hoverfly is Syrphus ribesii in case you are interested

One small cricticism is that they all appear a bit overexposed, losing detail in the highlights. If you shot in RAW you can try pulling the highlights down a bit to regain some detail, like in the white butterfly's wings

Thanks for the reply Jomike, will try shooting Raw next time. I have only had my DSLR for a couple of months so I have a lot to learn yet but any pointers from you and any other posters are most welcome.

hilly10 thanks for the reply, just saw in a previous thread that you now have the Tamron 90mm. These pictures were taken with the same lens. Look forward to seeing your results.

Great shots, esp 3 & 4. Very impressive for early macro work. Nice backgrounds and dof. Keep it up!

No.4 stands out for me, nice flower interest and clean pleasing background. Of course the focus on the insect is spot on too.

I always shoot raw and use Lightroom to tweak the shots. It gives you some leeway if you don't get it right first time

shooting in direct sunlight is always a problem for overexposure, especially on light colours and whites. I find I get better results if I shade the subject with my body and use diffused fill flash.

Keep shooting and posting!

Wow these are really good, no. 3 particularly stands out for me - with the detail in the wing. Nice colours.

What camera/settings were these taken on? Ta!
