The worls smallest DSLR.....

Quote:
Panasonic has announced the world's first Micro Four Thirds system camera, the 12.1-megapixel Lumix DMC-G1, that they say is the world's smallest and lightest digital interchangeable lens camera, weighing in at around 385 grams.

The camera is based on the new Micro Four Thirds System standard, eliminating the internal mirror found in digital single-lens reflex cameras, so is smaller and lighter.

Heres an interesting bit;

It seems to be a DSLR without any manual control.

No, it has pretty much your standard DSLR modes. Essentially it's a DSLR without a pentaprism and mirror box, using a high res electronic viewfinder.

Re: The worls smallest DSLR.....

It's not a DSLR as it doesn't have the reflex bit. More a DSL.

Re: The worls smallest DSLR.....

I think you could say it's a high quality bridge camera with interchangeable lenses. Preview seemed to suggest they were hoping cameras that follow would be a little smaller so still some work to do perhaps. I should think it's good if you want tiny cameras with reasonable quality but I don't quite 'get' it... I like larger SLRs to match my big mitts though so I'm not really the target market.

Re: The worls smallest DSLR.....

It looks like the first model is squarely aimed at the Panny FZ brigade. It's not what I want, but is an interesting first camera. Something more in the DP-1 mould would suit me, like those fake renderings we saw recently.

It will be interesting to see what Olympus do as the G1 is a bit close to the 420. I would think that using in-body stabilisation rather than lens based has got to be a better option as image stabilised lenses that I have seen look to be quite a lot larger than their non stabilised counterparts. Please correct me if there is little size difference in the latest generation of lenses.
