The conditions were awfully.

1/1600 ISO 400 210mm ƒ4.0

All shot on a D40 with a non CPU lens hand held 210mm.
CC very welcome.
I'm still trying to come to terms with my new non CPU lens

Re: Surfers from today

I would have to stand back from the crowd. Apart from the roaring sea, there's nothing there that grabs my peg leg I'm afraid.

Re: Surfers from today

These photos remind me why I am not a pro surfer - it looks blomming cold and horrible there! Of course not having any coordination, balance or surfer good looks probably hampers me more but I couldn't go out into the sea in those conditions!

Although you've defintely captured the awful weather conditions here the compositions you've chosen aren't as strong as they could be. Also the 210mm focal length isn't quite long enough to get "close to the action". However, I guess getting closer to the action would have meant you getting wet so I don't blame you!

No 1 would have been stronger if the light house was positioned further to the left - about a third of the way in from the left of the frame - and the surfer was more over to the right of the frame. Having them both in the middle weakens the composition.

In No 2 the surfer is a bit too small in the scene to appreciate what's happening to them. Also the surfer is quite close to the middle of the frame which dilutes the impact of the lone surfer.

No 3 is the pick of the bunch and brings home really how horrible the weather was. Positioning the man in the middle of the frame dilutes the impact again however.

One quick question though - what does "non CPU lens" mean? I've not come across that phrase before...

Re: Surfers from today

non-cpu. The lens has no communication with the camera, so i have to set pretty much everything on the fly.

Thanks for the input, i know there all throw away shots but if i never ask i'll never get better
